If anyone's interested... record your swim meterage.

Put in what you want to swim for the year and it tells you what you have to aim for each week....
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/23297159/Da...rsion%20a.xlsx

(thanks for Trondi on swimclub)

I am aiming for 624,000m this year, at the moment it says NO on the stats, but hoping it will say YES once i get some more M under my belt/goggles/hat.

Hello Swimmers. Blimey, I haven't been swimming for weeks and weeks. It's all just been bit metal lately. Work went mad, then the house sale co-incided with getting massively fraudulated, a load of job interviews for me, family getting sick then we both got noro-virus over Christmas and New Year and still haven't fully recovered. And now we're up to our eyes in decorating and moving. I honestly don't think i've been to the pool since November.

Was debating leaving Otter as it's so expensive, and although I enjoy it when I can get to it, the timing of the sessions meant that I very often couldn't. Was paying 50 a month for often one (or less) session a week. Now we're moving away from the most regular Queen Mother sessions as well... I believe they do meet at Crystal Palace which is near the new place so will keep membership up for now.

Anyway, best of luck with your new year swimming goals. Mine is to start swimming again.

Hey Dooks, Congrats on your move !

Spencer swim team (southies) use Crystal palace and Dulwich college both near you now ? you can pay per session.
Also Croydon Amphibians use crystal palace too.... you could always get a few free trial sessions ? :)

Hope you are back swimming soon-ish.

I keep trying to do front crawl, then run out of breath and revert back to breaststroke.

If I could do the whole thing in crawl I might be a bit faster.

Don't revert to breastroke, stop, rest, recover swim again. You will soon be doing 1500 m without stopping.

I'll give that a go tonight, only issue is it being lane swimming you cannot really stop and tread water until you want to go again.

i'm no expert by any means but i went from swimming 1 to 2 lengths a go to being able to do over 1500m non stop in two months by swimming as much as i could each session and trying to just improve my distance each session.

where bouts in london you swimming then? i'm going to ironmonger baths pool. also by some of your other posts it sounds like you're training for a triathlon, if so which one?

Just try to finish the lap... But you probably need to breath more often or try swimming slower... Pace yourself.

Before Christmas I did some arms-only drills with a float held (oh so glamourously between my legs), and found that I didn't run out of breath then.

This led me to the possibly false conclusion that it is powering my legs that is costing me more oxygen than I have on board- therefore I need to simply swim more and become more efficient.

Also, all my other training (well, running and cycling) does not involve holding my breath, so my body simply isn't used to having to deal with things as-is for three strokes.

Forest Hill Pools, as it's just round the corner from me, and I'm on the waiting list for the Crystal Palace Tri, along with half of the rest of the world it appears.

They're cutting bike locks at London Fields lido today. When I got out of the pool this morning the council was there cutting off locks that's been left, bikes to follow I guess.

So if you've got a lock / bike there parked, I'd get there to pick it up asap

It sold out within a few hours this year. It's a good event though.

My flatmate swims at Crystal Palace midweek evenings - it's not as busy as you might have thought, and pretty well located for you.

Forest Hill is really nice facilities wise, but I find the lane swim too frustrating, and end up zig-zagging down the "free swim" part of the pool, as you can at least get round people there.

You can use the SWOLF / efficiency as a training aid (write up here) - but you would need to use it in conjunction with drills / technique work to find what works best. For sheer am-i-going-faster, it's probably not that useful.

RANT ALERT

i now have to ring around all the different pools in london to try and find a pool that a) doesn't have lane closures due to private hire or swim lessons and b) that's not a womens only night and c) isn't just generally busy.

a few times now i've turned up and haven't been able to do any sets as the lanes are just too busy with breast strokers clogging up all the lanes! even the designated 'fast lanes'. what the fk can i do! so annoying and a waste of money paying when it's like that.

rant over

Ask them to make the lanes wider.... then you can over take.
I hate breast strokers, but i must admit i kicked quite a few people the other day on those sets.... at least i moved over to the medium lane, as my bs is so slow.

Missed my thursday swim... after not drinking any alcohol for 6 weeks (aiming for 12 weeks), i succumbed to the best part of a bottle of red last night.....

Feel RUFF today. Have to swim sat and sun now to make up for it..... Pyramid torture set and times on the cards ..... :/

Got the swimathon in april and want to beat my time from last year but it's definitely not happening at the moment.

More cycling on the cards this year....... some longer rides.

cool. i would love to be able to work up towards a 10k, that would be awesome. think my mental strength would break down before my physical strength tho! 10k is a long time to be in the water without any other form of stimulation. think i'd struggle getting used to that! kudos to you though.

im working towards an ironman in june called 'city to summit'. it's up in scotland with the swim part in the firth of forth, which i'm told is quite a tidal area and will be tough! i'm just hoping the RNLI will be on hand to stop me drifting off towards norway or something!

did a 400m time trial last night and got under 7mins so i'm happy with my progress i'm making. just need to up the endurance aspect of my sessions so that i get more stamina.

may also try and get down to dover before june so that i get at least one sea swim in before the big event! don't want to be completely unprepared!

Hello. I STILL haven't been swimming yet this year. Vee poor. Am consoled by the fact that i'm cycling a lot at the moment and enjoying running. Really must get back in soon though. My tri buddies are noth doing near daily lunchtime swims.

Decided to let my Otter membership go as there was no way I was going to get to enough sessions now we've moved away. Printed out the Forest Hill pool timetable yesterday, appears to be very little time devoted to lane swimming and nothing to speak of after work. Hmmm. Call me a wuss but it's still a cold for Brockwell Lido (although I've cheered myself up by realising my new commute home takes right past it so that's a definite plan for the spring). Anyone use Crystal Palace pool?

Speaking as a woman I LOVE women's only sessions as the pool is generally way quieter at Dulwich and Peckham Pulse. I'm assuming there are women only sessions on religious grounds but half the time there is a male on duty : / And the session is usually an hour tops, not all night.

Also: Peckham Pulse pool is always well quiet whenever I've been so maybe try that?

My flatmate swims there occasionally - from the sound of it, you'll struggle a little if you're doing CSS / threshold sets, but for plain up & down it's ok.

People still pick the wrong lanes, but a word with the lifeguard can see them shunted.
