I run 28s but could go wider.....

You basically get an uphill and flat/downhill gear, I couldn't give a comparison to a geared bike as I don't have one. Low gear is direct, so for me 42t/22t, high gear is +38%. Gear change is straightforward, you can change to suit as the sprocket is easily changed.
