Hmmm, that is a little troubling.. I'd never have thought a bike thief would think to use a key to get into a lock. Would be good to hear from anyone else if they've had an issue with the X4. I'd still say it's a solid lock, and combined with the fahg mini (and a Xena alarm if left longer than half an hour) I feel relatively secure... well, as secure as you can feel with all the thieving scum in London.
On a separate note, my girlfriend's just bought a bike and is in need of a lock. Other than getting something solid, her main concern is portability. She rarely rides with a bag and I can't see her persevering with a mini fahg + Fabric Horse holster, so she wants to get a frame mounted u lock... Krypto mounting brackets don't seem to get the best of reviews, and as I say, the Brute X4's bracket is dire.... are there any solid 16mm+ U locks that have decent frame mounting brackets?
People seem to rate the bracket on the Abus Granit X-Plus 54, and although only 13mm thick, seems to have the resistance of thicker locks. Any other suggestions... does the GRP Superdeals U-Lock come with a decent bracket?

Had a question about one of the comments on the first page... next to the Onguard Brute X4 it's got "[WARNING: Issued key combinations are too few.]".... I'm probably being massively dense here, but what exactly is the issue? "Key combinations are too few"... what does that mean, and how does it negatively effect the lock? I've got the Brute X4 and have had no issues with it so far.. seems like a very sturdy lock at a great price (I use it in combination with a mini fahg). The only real negative is that the mounting bracket is awful, but I wouldn't use it anyway as I just stick it in my bag.
Also, I know it's only recommended on here as a secondary lock, but a word of warning about the Abus Steel-O-Flex Granit X-Plus 1050... my mate's bike was stolen last night (I won't say what bike it was because I know the thieving little f*ckers monitor this site to see how hard people are looking for stolen bikes - I've made that mistake myself), and he was using the Steel-O-Flex as the only lock... I know, I know.. he should have been using an minimum 16mm U-lock as the primary, but he'd literally only left it for one minute, and it had been cropped in that short a time.. lock was just left behind cut in half. I see loads of bikes only locked with a Steel-O-Flex or an equivalent cable lock, but you should honestly heed the warnings, it just isn't worth the risk...

Although the Xena's as sensitive as an angry teenager with acne, I'm still happy I've got it. I wouldn't use it in locations where it's likely to get knocked a lot, but since it's not 'that' heavy it's transportable enough for me to carry around just in case I ever think the bike's vulnerable. If I leave it for longer than an hour its a necessity, and like finger_jockey says, if a thief tries to have a go at it he better be wearing ear plugs or suffer from tinnitus cos that is one unpleasant noise...

Fahg mini + Evo mini seems to be a popular combo, but am I right in thinking a thief would then only need one type of tool to get into this setup (although would hopefully take 'em a fair while)?
Would a Fahg mini + a decent chain be a better bet if double locking? Apologies if this has already been asked... this is a bloody long (but vital) thread to have to get through to see if all points have already been covered. Cheers!

Cheers for thinking of us though mate. I actually just ordered the Felt Brougham today from Cyclelane.co.uk and I'm a very happy chappy. They had it on sale last week for just £405, but when I went to order it the sale had ended and was back at £450. Luckily the guy who runs the shop, Jon, is a really sound guy and he let me have it for the sale price.. top bloke! Can't wait to get my grubby little mits on her...

I'm 99% sure the Brougham is the bike for me... but the SE Draft Lite keeps whispering sweet nothings in my ear, and at a penny short of 270 notes it could be the affordable choice - http://www.onyerbike.co.uk/se_bikes_draft_lite
I'd prob eventually swap out wheels, stem, bar, crank etc, but does anyone have any personal experience of the frame? Is it pretty duff??
Man, I wish I wasn't such a pauper! Spare any change guv'nor...

Ahaaa.. we are now well and truly singing from the same hymn sheet! Yep, I'm based in Rivington Place, just round the corner from Cargo in Rivington Street, off Shoreditch High Street. I'm happy to meet anywhere round there, say outside Cargo around 2pm tomorrow?
The more the merrier too.. if anyone else wants to check it out feel free to head on down. PM me so I know who's around and we don't miss anyone.

It's not.. what are you wearing, is it? I'm gonna go with.. why didn't you buy the latest XR1 model? Cos I'd already ordered the XZZ6 and presumed it was up to the job.
Either way, I'm happy with it. Was that the question..? If it was the former, I'm wearing shorts, t-shirt, hoody, and slightly concerned look on my face...

mmccarthy.. you're quite right to point out my glaring error, consider wrists well and truly slapped (my apologies to you too Kenny). Originally in my head it was 'Playing with the Boys', but that sounded a bit homo-erotic so I decided it must be 'Hanging' instead.... because I'm sure we can all agree, that song is far from homo-erotic. Go on Kenny lad...

On the strength of Clefty's review I ordered the XZZ6 and it arrived today. Since I'm currently bikeless after a recent theft I decided to try her out on my mates Condor Italia.. pauses to wipe drool from mouth.. attached to the chain ring.
Have to say, I'm very impressed so far, but I've found exactly the same issue as Bigfoot.. when it's triggered by movement (and not much movement at that) it gives a couple of warning beeps then sounds the alarm for 15 seconds. I thought the idea was that it would give out a few warning beeps first, and if movement stops, the alarm wouldn't sound.
That would seem like the most practical solution, especially if the bikes locked in an area where it might get accidentally knocked. To be honest though, I'm willing to accept it's potential annoyance / embarrassment factor for the peace of mind it will give me when locking up the new steed (when I've eventually decided what that will be!).
Oh yeah.. it's also loud as f*ck, my eardrums were still throbbing 5 minutes afterwards since I was stood right next to it... if only I'd made the investment this time last week!

GA2G... out of interest, would you rate the Brougham's frame / components /wheels higher than the Fuji Track, or isn't there much in it? If I don't attempt to build from scratch (which is looking less likely as I'm just desperate to get back on the road asap) I've pretty much narrowed it down to the Track or the Broughton within my budget (£400ish).
If going for the Track I'd be spending roughly another £50 on front brake and riser bar which would put it at a similar price. Obviously it comes down to personal choice in the end and I'm not expecting anyone to make a decision for me, but I'm happy to ask the question of those more knowledgeable on such matters. I look forward to hearing how Blake gets on with his Brougham at the weekend, enjoy it mate... cheers y'all
Dibs on the 60s seatpost if still available..? PM'ing
