That'd explain it then (broken spoke apparently) - there's a bit of it in this clip at about 2:57 - fucking quick change over, so well planned. On the very low-quality feed I was watching it was well covered, and it got me thinking, 40ish to 0 and back again in 45 seconds is pretty incredible really - at that speed the group should've gained a minimum of 500 metres on him, so I can only assume that they eased off a bit - or he got a tow like Hippy was saying.
I missed that change, maybe they missed it too.

When Boonen punctured that last time about 30km from the end, he punctured, stopped, swapped bikes and got back to the other four all within about 45 seconds - surely they must have slowed for him for that to be possible?
Is there some sort of etiquette involved in these matters, especially as it would've had a big effect on the result if they'd continued slogging on at 40km/h?Are you sure that wasn't Stijn Devolder? He had a few problems including a bike change, and he never made it back.

My first post
I watch all cycling over the internet: http://www.cyclingfans.com gives links to live feeds of all races available on that day. Today a wet Gent-Wevelgem and after Tour of the Basque Country hill top finish, with Contador on his home made juice. Also http://www.youtube.com/user/Wielerflits
provides highlights if you miss anything. -
