Did you see Owen Jones suggesting Ukraine should be a 'buffer zone'? He was called out and forced into an apology for it, but the fact he said it in the first place is indicative of the mindset.
I didn't see that, no. But:
So Owen Jones is the person who you meant when you said the far left don't believe Ukraine has a right to self-determination and should be a vassal to Putin?
Cool. If that's his position he's wrong. Let's call him out on it. In fact, sounds like people did and he made his position clearer and apologised.

In terms of STW, I know we went over this ground last week, but I can't reconcile how they believe Ukraine should be entitled to "self-determination", but it should also be barred from seeking to join international organisations.
We did go over this. And I'll make this point again: No one is barring them from seeking to join. The position is that no one has a sovereign right to be a member of Nato (or any other international organisation). This is a position shared by many people on the left and the right and the centre. It is a sane position. It is not a position unique to STW.
But that's a different conversation. You claimed there are people on the "far left" who don't "recognise the people of Ukraine have a right to self determination" and think Ukraine should "simply accept being a vassal state of Putin." I don't think this is a particularly widespread view and it's annoying to keep reading it spewed as fact.

Back to Finland and Nato - for the first time there has been a poll that shows a majority supporting membership: https://yle.fi/news/3-12337202
I'd still not be putting bets on them joining, but that alone is a pretty big deal.
-
It is not a reference to Zarah Sultana. Some in STW, yes. Anyone talking about buffer zones or spheres of influence needs to do some thinking about their worldview.
You've still not said who it's a reference to. Maybe instead of making vague and ambiguous insinuations towards about "the left" which people can, and do, read to mean what they want, you can be a bit more precise and name the people on the left who don't "recognise the people of Ukraine have a right to self determination" and think Ukraine should "simply accept being a vassal state of Putin." I'm fairly sure that, if there are any, it's a very small number. So painting an entire part of the political spectrum with that accusation is a bit disingenuous (verging on dangerous in such a politically charged atmosphere).

I suspect this is just spin to make the moronic crypto libertarians think that Coinbase agrees with them and their half arsed ideology.
It also smells a bit like rationalising potential war profiteering. (Not an attack on people who hold crypto. But these guys could earn big if Russian sanctions push people to them).
-
The difference between the tanky far left and everyone else is that we recognise the people of Ukraine have a right to self determination and shouldn't simply accept being a vassal state of Putin.
Who's this a reference to? STW? People like Zarah Sultana who has had to deal with death threats because of people - including those in her own party - making claims like this?
-
why your insistence on saying bitcoin instead of crypto?
Because they used it in their example.
Listen, you posted a link to a (imho) total loser. I responded to it by calling him a cunt. I had no idea what your opinion was, and couldn't possibly be responding to your opinion because you didn't provide one. I'm sorry if you feel attacked.

Apparently I posted this on the wrong thread: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/129650/?offset=200#comment16417329

Yeah, public support had been going up in Finland as well, and there's been no real political consensus to join, let alone a really strong public desire.
Finland nailed walking the line between the USSR/Russia and NATO (we even got a new word out of it: Finlandization). There's a reason the putin/trump summit was in Helsinki . To radically change course at this moment would really, really, surprise me.
-
Germany have made huge changes to their long standing policies today as well, massive increase in defence spending, lifting export controls to conflict zones etc.
True, and by all reports that's pretty a big deal.
But I don't know enough (anything) about Germany on this to say whether that would be equivalent to Finland applying, being invited, and accepting the invitation to, join NATO. I somehow expect not.
-
Ignoring the fact that NATO would have to agree to let Finland join (why would they?), Finland joining NATO would be a remarkable change in a policy that has allowed them to remain free and prosper throughout the cold war. It's a topic that people there are very attuned to and support is hardly universal. And I wouldn't say a Russian invasion of Ukraine would exactly push people running to NATO. I honestly can't see it happening.
Having said that, Finland closing airspace to Russia is a pretty remarkable thing.

Are you serious that you want me to comment on this? What is your problem?
