I think you confuse religious reality with the benign stories that religious groups like to tell about themselves. There will of course be compassion towards people in their in-group even if they are paedophiles or murderers. Most Christians in western societies are mostly in it for the holidays and maybe have some left over esoteric belief in a god but don't really live their lives

I was 6 and my parents in their thirties and of course I was not making the decisions. The situation at the time was different because the challenge was to leave your own country, not enter the other. My parents left friends and family behind. I think my dad was pretty set for Canada because he was teaching himself English for years.

The person with the wife in the Uk would be much better for her as a legal asylum seeker in Europe were she probably could join him eventually than risk dying on the way.

I still don't really understand the motivation, when we applied for asylum in Germany in the 80s my parents initially wanted to continue on to Canada because they knew some people there but around that time Jaruzelski declared martial law in Poland so Polish people had priority. So we stayed in Germany.
