I guess career advisors are still a thing but I don't really know about them, maybe the post-school equivalent would be someone working in recruitment? A life/career coach comes at solving that challenge from a slightly different angle, working with you to find out what is important to you and what you want to pursue rather than someone telling you all the different jobs/roles that you might be appropriate for.
My first paying client was from lfgss and he smashed his career transition goals, so give me a shout/reply here if you want to ask any questions about life coaching or career transitions. I always think that the advice other forum-members contribute with here is pretty strong too.
Thanks @RubberDucky too

It's interesting to think that becoming some kind of programmer could be seen as 'breaking free of professional life'
This kind of hit me! I felt like I had totally broken free after trading a full time job for a... full time job? I think it's indicative of a sense that you've transitioned from a job where you have to be a "professional" to a job where you can be yourself, whether that's in how you express yourself through your work, how you schedule your work week, your wellbeing or something else entirely.

About 7 months ago I first posted here about a possible escape route from my job (teaching) in to career/life coaching and I want to post an update.
I left my day job Feb 11th and am approaching, but still some way off, making a living wage for my city almost 4 months later. My first paying client was an lfgss member looking to improve their job satisfaction and my most recent client is a local start up CEO looking to experiment with coaching to improve their company. Working as self-employed for the first time has been just so awesome.. I've never enjoyed that kind of flexibility at work as a teacher or as a bar manager (always working xmas day and NYE).
The space to explore this business/sector has been huge but my current challenge is whether or not to pick up some regular work on the side to sustain myself while I build up my experience and client base to a point where it can be sustainable/financially viable.
If anyone's curious about anything coaching or wants to chat, send me a message here or check out my website . Be great to hear what other people are up to, the last year has no doubt been catalytic in some ways.

I'm with Eseman! Breakdown's can feel very damaging but if you consider your two positions, one of being in a job you hated (past) and one of being unemployed with an open mind (present), your current position is a big step closer towards having a job you find fulfilling. This is the position you need to be in to make the next step. I'd ask yourself "what job characteristics do I tend to enjoy?" and see where that leads.

I feel like I've almost come full circle in this thread now.. I've just made a big leap at breaking free from professional life, handed my notice in last week, finish my current job 11th Feb! I've been working full time as a teacher for the past 3.5 years and honestly getting sicker and sicker of this super narrow curriculum that doesn't prepare kids for life outside of exams. This academic year I went down to 4d/w contract and enrolled in a life coaching course with MOE. I qualified in November and have been taking on clients left and right since and one niche I've really identified with is helping people who dislike their present position find fulfilment through work.
For those who don't know what coaching's about.. It's about having someone skilled to help you find the things that speak out most strongly to you and then support you in making progress towards those things. I coach people over all sorts of obstacles, one of my strengths is the motivation I bring to the table.
So I'm just leaving my personal professional life hell and have found work that really inspires and energises me and that closes the loop for me as I'm now offering to help other people out of their own problems in the very same space that I came to. If you're interested in coaching send me a private message here (or on my linkedin here ) and we can get the ball rolling, first two sessions are free. If anyone feels like they really need coaching but couldn't pay for it, please send me a message anyway and we may be able to sort something out.

I follow this thread. I've just completed a life coaching qualification with the MOE foundation and am pumped to try and use that to pivot out of my current job which I'm really disliking at the moment. Tempted to try and train as a mechanic/get entry level bike mech work to get out in the short term. I have an emerging awareness that my fulfilment at work has a huge impact on every area of my life. What options would you be entertaining if you were to leave your job in the next few months?

This lovely 64cm Condor Acciao w/ shimano 105 groupset and fulcrum wheels. Steel with carbon fibre forks.
I'm broadly looking for a steel or titanium (keep dreaming, I know) frame with clearance enough for gravel tyres.
