First proper bike was called Gearless Joe (a friend came up with the name). The one I've just finished building is called Black Moll, after a character that appears briefly in the opening scene of John Gay's 'Beggars' Opera'. The crappy old mountain bike that I rode from Edinburgh to Brighton (and is now rusting somewhere on the University of Sussex campus) was called the Bognor Belle.
The act of putting inanimate components together to form a bicycle is a process of magic. The machine is imbued with life and becomes part of its owner, which is justification enough for a name, I think. Anyone who is unsure on this point should refer to 'The Third Policeman' by Flann O' Brien, and the scientific works of de Selby. -
Hello, I would like to travel from Ramsgate to Oostende sometime in September or October, but like others on this forum, have found myself frustrated by the ferry company's anti-cyclist policy. I asked the woman at the booking agent what difference it would make if I disguised my bicycle as a motorbike (perhaps attach a lawnmower motor or hairdryer to it?), but this did not help. One idea I have had is to simply hang around at the port and ask van / lorry drivers if they would be willing to take me with my bike in the back. Does anyone know if this is possible? Has anyone tried it? Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I was considering going up to London from Margate so I could do the whole ride back with everyone, as this looks very exciting.Unfortunately I am now working at 6pm on Sunday, so will not even be able to join the riders at Herne Bay. :( However, I invite you to stop for an end of ride drink at the Lifeboat (http://www.facebook.com/aleandcider), where I will be manning the bar and will gladly accommodate you.
Happy cycling! -

Hello, I am new to lfgss, having recently finished building my first proper bike. There doesn't seem to be much of a fixed scene in Margate (I only know three other guys that are into it), so naturally I was delighted to read that a group from London (my home town for many years) will be riding down this way. If I can get some time of work, would it be possible to meet you in Herne Bay and join the ride along the path to Margate? Could culminate with some Kentish ales and ciders at my workplace, The Lifeboat.
Regards,
Jonny
