The Hackney Peddler is an independent bike shop in the heart of East London. We specialise in building bespoke custom bicycles based around classic and new steel frames. We also stock a refined range of restored and modified bikes, frames, and parts, as well as the usual mix of parts and accessories you’d expect to find in a bike shop. In addition to this, our team of well experienced mechanics operate a heavily tooled up workshop and take pride in being able to fix everything brought into us - everything from that old rust bucket out the shed to your high performance carbon beauty.
Role & Responsibilities
Day to day you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the shop floor. This includes, but is not limited to:
Bike and accessory sales to ensure company targets are met
Visual merchandising the shop floor and regular display update
Managing stock levels and making key decisions about stock control and ordering whilst working within budgets
Analysing sales figures and forecasting future sales volumes to maximise profits
Becoming competent with Citrus Lime
Maintaining market awareness and performing competitor analysis
Maintaining a tidy and safe working environment and helping ensure others do the same
Over time growing a full front of house team
Any ad hoc tasks as and when requiredAs well as the above you are able to:

Be autonomous, organise your work day and multitask were necessary
Work well under pressure and keep your cool when things heat up
Possess initiative and be perpetually improving thing were possible
Create an excellent customer and team experience

Salary is £22,000 - £24,000 basic per year depending on experience
Access to the company bonus scheme with additional OTE earnings up to £4,000 per year

We also stock a refined range of refurbished bikes, frames, and parts, as well as the usual mix of parts and accessories you’d expect to find in a bike shop. In addition to this we operate a heavily tooled up workshop and take pride in being able to fix everything brought into us. We’re now looking for an experienced Mechanic/Bike Builder to join the4 team and prepare our vast stock of classic bikes and frames.
Role & Responsibilities
Minimum 3 years experience of working with bikes, specifically steel bikes, and understand the attention to detail that classic and custom bike work requires. You will take pride in your work and share a real passion for classic steel bikes.
Day to day you will be responsible for the preparation of our shop floor sale bikes. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Stripping, cleaning and rebuilding of shop bikes
- Wheel building
- Cleaning and polishing classic frames and parts
- Liaising with the Workshop Manager to ensure stock levels are maintained
- Maintaining a tidy and safe working environment and helping ensure others do the same
- Any ad hoc tasks as and when required
As well as the above you are able to:
Motivate yourself to work independently or as part of a team
Be autonomous and organise your daily workload
Work well under pressure and keep your cool when things heat up
Manage your time productively
Demonstrate a readiness to learn and develop
Have a sense of urgency and ability to think outside the box occasionallySalary and benefits

We’re now looking for a part time Part Time Mechanic/Bike Builder to work on and prepare our vast stock of classic bikes and frames.
Role & Responsibilities
Ideally you will have experience of working with steel bikes and understand the attention to detail that classic and custom bike work requires. You will take pride in your work and share a real passion for classic steel bikes.
Day to day you will be responsible for the preparation of our shop floor sale bikes. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Stripping, cleaning and rebuilding of shop bikes
- Wheel building

- Liaising with the Head Mechanic to ensure stock levels are maintained
- Maintaining a tidy and safe working environment and helping ensure others do the same

- Hourly rate dependent on experience

This is a progressive role and will be ideal for someone wanting to build on what they already know and learn about classic steel bike along the way. There may be the potential to pick up more shifts as and when they are available and eventually this may develop into a full time role.

Head Mechanic

The Hackney Peddler is an independent bike shop in the heart of East London. We specialise in building bespoke custom bicycles for our customers based around classic steel frames, using a mix of modern and vintage parts and components. We also stock a refined range of used bikes, frames, parts, and a small range of accessories. In addition to this we operate a heavily tooled up workshop and take pride in being able to fix everything brought into us. We’re now looking for an experienced Head Mechanic to maintain the day to day running of our workshop and contribute to our ambitious long term expansion plan.
Role & Responsibilities
Ideally you will have 3-5 years mechanic experience and understand the attention to detail that classic and custom bike work requires. A Cytech level 2 qualification or the equivalent would be preferable, but is not essential as we are prepared to offer this training to the ideal person. You will take pride in your work and share a real passion for classic steel bikes.
Day to day you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the workshop. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Assessing, quoting and booking of all repairs and services
- Coordinating the team of mechanics to ensure all work is completed promptly and to a high standard
- Scheduling of custom bike builds and shop floor bike renovation
- Liaising with the Shop Manager to maintain stock levels and ensure special orders are made on time
- Maintaining a tidy and safe working environment and helping ensure others do the same
- Regular upkeep of all tools and workshop supplies
- Any ad hoc tasks as and when required
As well as the above you are able to:
- Motivate yourself to work independently or as part of a team
- Be autonomous, organise your work day and multitask were necessary
- Work well under pressure and keep your cool when things heat up
- Create an excellent customer and team experience
- Think outside the box and get creative when unusual jobs pop up
- Computer literate and possess a good standard of written communication
Salary and benefits
- Salary is £21,000 - £24,000 per year depending on experience and is also subject to a probationary period
- 28 days paid holiday per year
