Listening to Spoon - Gimme Fiction this morning, and noticed that at the start of My Mathematical Mind there is the sound of a bicycle being freewheeled away.
Later in the song, these lyrics:
My mathematical mind can see the breaks
So I'm gonna stop riding the brakes
No no no no more ride the brakes
The dude is riding brakeless (OK, my interpretation... but still). Then of course there are other slightly more famous bike songs like Queen's Bicycle Race and Fat Bottomed Girls ("Get on your bike and RIDE!").
If you were making a mix tape or CD of bike songs, what would you add?

Jos:GOLDEN WHEEL 20K SCRATCH, Is basically a race over 20km with the first one over the line winning.
Yup, the scratch refers to the fact that with a lot of people racing such distance, the more elite of the group traditionally started way behind the field at lines scratched onto the track. So scratch races are large field races in which the top riders are handicapped behind the pack when the race starts.

If you want a geared bike built to your every whim and specification and have the money for it:
Cycle Fit
http://www.cyclefit.co.uk/
11-13 Macklin Street, Covent Garden, London WC2Actually, one service they do that I would recommend to absolutely everyone is a fitting. They watch you ride on their size cycle and your own bike and will give you recommendations for adjustments to limit things like back pain, knee pain, and to increase comfort or power (whatever your aim is).

If we were to compile a list of essential bike shops in London, threw in a framebuilder or two, perhaps someone that does paint jobs, any master wheel-builders, etc... what would that list look like?
So this thread is about shopping local, helping London bike shops and individuals first, before we turn to the internet to source stuff from anywhere that has it.
I'm personally looking for a master wheel builder at the moment (to lace some already acquired Phil Woods to some yet to be acquired Ambrosio's as well as to take care of sourcing the correct length Sapim spokes), so any recommendations for that would be appreciated.
First up the two most obvious shops just to get things rolling:
**Condor **(Bike Shop, workshop, can order most things, own range of bikes, lots of clothing)
51 Grays Inn Road, London, WC1X 8PP
http://www.condorcycles.com/Brixton Cycles (Bike Shop, workshop, good for fg & ss stuff, workers co-op)
145 Stockwell Road, Brixton, London SW9 9TN

damnham:i'm in - hope to get down there early doors so i can pick up any bargains that may be lying around
They sell stuff? I thought this was a track racing meet?
You two have my number already... I'll keep a note of everyone else's and let everyone know mine. I'm sure we'll work out how to meet-up during the day.
-
OK, roll call, who's going down there this Friday? The weather looks like it will be glorious.
If anyone is going, happy to whisper my mobile to you so we can meet up on the day.I'll be there for most of the day I suspect, though not too early as I'm going to be right royally slaughtered on Thursday night.

I seriously thought about getting some HED's, but the downside to doing so is that you could never leave your bike locked outside unattended.
I like going clubbing with my bike, there's nothing on the bike that warrants the finding of an angle grinder to get the chain off... a paid of HED's though, that would sure be a mighty temptation.

I fancy a post-work climb up Highgate West Hill plus some drinks at the top... if that's what you had in mind ;)
