I usually clip mine to a backpack strap. Much more stylish that way.
But seriously - most people have the capacity to make a judgment as to whether or not they should wear a helmet/headphones on a particular journey. You, not being them, lack a large chunk of the information that led them to make their decision. I do not think your contribution would be meaningful in any way.

I also steer clear because of the palm oil, and make my own butter. It's surprisingly easy - there are plenty of recipes online. I don't have mine to hand, but it uses coconut oil, olive oil, soy milk, a pinch of salt and some liquid lecithin. You basically whip everything together for a few minutes and then leave to set. Voila! Delicious, fluffy butter. Melts on toast and makes great buttercream icing.

Hey! I am doing this (kind of) in August - St Malo down the west coast of France, then down through Spain, then carrying on south for a bit. But eventually I will come back north and get the Santander-Portsmouth ferry, also to reduce air travel.
- Planning 100m/day, which imo is very doable with early starts to get most of the cycling out of the way before the heat hits.
- The ferry journey will probably be pretty horrible - I haven't got a cabin, just a seat. Bring some olives to help you get through it. If you get a cabin you'll be totally fine. They're pretty comfy and you get a shower!
- Also debating tent vs bivvy. I think I'm leaning towards bivvy atm.

I think you're right. :( Got the measuring tape out and my frame is about a metre across at its widest point - they say nothing longer than 85cm is allowed. So, that's a no go, although I've sent Eurostar an email, just in case.
Happily, you can still take them on the Eurostar to Paris and then get the TGV to Marseille. Fingers crossed it won't cost too much if booked well in advance.

Has anyone taken the Eurostar to Marseille (with a full-sized bike) recently? I'm planning on making the trip later this year, but the Eurostar website seems to say that the only way of travelling with a bike is using their third-party carrier (at a cost of £60 for a single piece of luggage. Thank you, but no.)
Could I get away with partial disassembly (wheels off, turn handlebar) and wrapping in cling-film, or is that a no-go?

Dunkirk is pretty bleak. The port isn't that close to the town proper, the roads are busy with lorries and there's no scenery to speak of. Belgian coast is ok, especially as you won't be going in the height of summer. I saw a few people camping along the Bruges-Ghent canal, and planned to do so myself, but stuff happened, so. It would be ok for one night, I think. But you could easily do Dunkirk - Ghent in a day, and stay there overnight. Ghent is lovely.
