So I've been riding riding my first fixed gear for the past day or so. The bike has a 48/17 ratio which I am finding comfortable, rode up some short hills without a problem. However I am finding it hard to slow down/skid. I have a front brake but would like to master slowing down using my legs. Would a lower gear ratio help this? For example 48/19 or 46/17?

Just picked up my first fixed gear bike for £80 that will be a short project. Would like to run risers instead of drops. Could also do with a few other bits but must save first. For now, has anyone got some seriously cheap and fairly wide 25.4 maybe 26mm risers lying around that they are willing to post?

@c00ps thanks will have a read of both threads later on

Last night I was cycling down to my nearest supermarket amd a woman making a turn across from the other side of the road, drove straight into the side of my rear wheel because she ' just didn't see me coming'. If I was half a second slower she would be had most likely knocked me off my bike. I stopped 10 metres further on from where the incident took place and she came and apologised as she should be checked for traffic before turning in. I was not injured and at the time thought my bike was still in fine condition so I accepted her apology and stupidly rode off. Later I realised that my rear wheel has an obvious bent rim and the right seat stay has paint damage.
I went down to the petrol station today to view the CCTV and now have the number plate of the woman who had driven in to me. However the CCTV does not show the incident.
What do I do next ? Any help appreciated

so, I haven't touched the bike for a few weeks or so and decided that maybe I should get round to doing something. I stripped the bike apart and cleaned a good amount of it before I got bored. Shifter problem is still semi-solved. My father has been busy with work etc so I haven't thought of doing much recently as it is a project we are doing together. If I can not fix the shifter I may consider chucking some risers/flats and trigger shifters on. Weather has been atrocious all summer holiday so I've been playing around on bikecad a bit. Here is a quick 5 minute mock up of the bike I did earlier.

@well_is_it Samsung Galaxy s3 :////// contract lasts another year hopefully will upgrade to iPhone after but the ca,era is really shocking
@h20 £150 isn't too bad
Decision is wether to save for new bike or camera -
Can Anyone recommend any decent bridge or compact cameras for under £100/120? Want to start taking more pictures when I'm exploring or on holiday and tired of taking photos on my shite camera phone. Amy good of the shelf options or is it best sock ding my money on used or refurbished.
Don't need anything asap just thinking for the future -
I'll have a play later. Still need to strip bike and give it a good clean . Anyone got any idea on how to remove some rust from the rear derailleur? Will post some pic of it later. It's just around the shimano logo, maybe just put some oil on it ? It doesn't effect the bikes performance I'm sure i just want rid purely for aesthetics

I leave for Cornwall on Saturday. Bike is currently not ready, however shifter problem is nearly resolved. Gears are shifting well but the return on the brake lever is a bit lagged and the front brake seeks to stick. Going to apply some cheap black bar tape I have lying around in the garage and some old pedals and turbo saddle and then will test ride later. Fingers crossed the bike will be ready by the end of this week.

@staggy slammed stem last week, may just keep it for time being. Going to try finish the bike for my holiday down to Cornwall. Then thrash it around town the whole summer holidays

Good shout on tyres, I missed out in some second hand gatorskins a few weeks ago. I'd prefer 23c over 25/28. Any benefits of a wider width?
Saddle wise - think I may just chuck the turbo from my other pug on this and then put an old blue sells italia saddle which has been hanging in my garage for a few years on the other one . I've been riding with the turbo for about a year and its moulded nicely to my bottom. -

UPDATE : seat post is out, I have discovered it is 25.4 mm diameter and I will probably replace it for a nice shiny one. Have considered buying a new stem, may purchase a longe one because in all honestly the frame is a tad small for me. I've seen a few fancy itm stems ( to match the bars)on eBay that grab my fancy. Saw these nice black ones however I do not know if this will match the whole bike. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=381284566705

Still not fixed the shifter, my dad has been fiddling about with it , following various YouTube tutorials etc, but still no luck. -
@hma I don't really have any experience with saddles apart from he turbo I use regularly but want a change as my turbo is a bit chunky
Cheers, Tom.
