Just an update - eventually got myself an entry level M2 Air. Been using it for client work this week and also some music in the evenings. Nothing heavy yet but so far its been brilliant - speed, battery power and uses office 365/outlook well. This is my first time using a mac instead of a windows based laptop and was worried about compatibility issues but seamless so far.
Now looking at getting a monitor when the next invoice is paid. Decent Dell one at £25o atm. https://www.currys.co.uk/products/dell-s2422hz-full-hd-23.8-ips-lcd-monitor-silver-and-black-10234752.html

Take a look at New Citizenship Project and Jon Alexander’s new book Citizens.

Highlights the one flaw in that although effective altruism is better, it doesn’t make any significant change.
Am interest in Rory Stewart’s new venture based on effective altruism but taking it further by giving people usually seen as ‘beneficiaries’ actual cash and from what I understand letting them decide where to spend for much better benefits than when an ngo gets in the way/slows things down.
(Full of head cold so bit of a ramble)

I guess you're right - but I think there is something in having a figurehead/representative of the state that is above the party political system. The monarchy have always played that role (since parliament was formed and am in no way suggesting it's all been fine).
The Queen and monarchy allowed people to project their own image of Britain - whatever that may be. To combine a head of state role with a PM role seems dangerous to me, especially with populism so prevalent at the moment, so I'm interested in what an alternative model would look like.
To be clear - I'm in no way a monarchist and am interested not only in proportional representation but even more progressive models of participatory democracy such as citizen assemblies to move past the current, rather toxic and limited system. Just not sure what that would look like if the the monarchy was dissolved tomorrow.

Genuine question - if the monarchy was abolished what would constitutional reform look like while ensuring there’s a separate, independent head of state to avoid a Trump/Bolsanaro type president figure?
Would people be happy for it to become a celeb type/ceremonial role like in other nations?
That’s been the only pro royalist argument that’s made me think about how the whole constitution would have to been rebuilt (which is arguably should be as has been failing for 10+ years).

Yep. Usually is my alarm but felt like I was being told to feel sad.
Is a momentous occasion in terms of history/a significant historical figure has passed away who oversaw or was a witness to a huge amount of social change so interesting times I guess but am avoiding any broadcast media for a week. And the local fb group - fucking hell.

Recently moved to Worcestershire and craving some city life, especially visual arts, culture, gigs, bars and clubs for occasional jaunts/late nights/early mornings. Too sleepy here and still struggling to make friends/meet like-minded people.
Bristol's only an hour away yet I don't know it at all so can anyone make any recommendations on venues/pubs/bars to follow and keep an eye out for last-minute weekend trips and nights out? And possibly where to avoid?
