I had to do this on the way back from Sardinia last summer. Four or five cardboard boxes from the cafe/gift shop then covered in that cling film stuff.

I did cassette and chain just before.

Am tempted by the disc version but I've got a non-disc dynamo wheelset which I was gonna use.

Might be looking at the second hand market. Any other bikes/brands I should consider as close substitutes for Surly?

Looking at the Surly Cross-check for some semi-off road touring. Not gonna be heavily packed but is this the bike for the job? What other bikes are similar? Genesis tour de fer?
