fair point. I think i have all the tools i need but is there any components you would recommend prioritising price wise over others. I was planning just a cheap saddle off ebay thats comfortable but the rest i want to be decent sturdy bits that will take a hammering. So far my prerequisites are drop bars and while i debated a flip flop hub for later use i have to be realistic and fit brakes for the intended use.

Hi,
My buddy convinced me ss or fg would be fun and when i got interested he donated an old Puch Cavalier for me to convert. I stripped the frame and intend to send the frame and forks away to be powder coated/sprayed. The thing is i know nothing about building bikes and i need to do this to a sensible budget. The ultimate endgame at this point is to try to do the coast to coast on it (ss) while my buddy uses his fixie.
So at this point I'm willing to take any advice thats could help.

To be fair i just got the cheapest from my local brew shop. If you can't find a shop just get one from ebay. They are all pretty much the same. Try the plastic caps too if you want to trial it first as you can sterilise and reuse them. If you have a dishwasher its a hell of a lot faster to sterilise the bottles on a hot wash.

bottle crimper and caps, crimper cost a tenner. Caps as cheap as possible per 100 on ebay. I begrudged paying for the swing top bottles online when i had a ton of normal bottles. You can get plastic reusable caps that don't need the crimper which i had great success with.
The only problem with the plastic caps is when you and your mates are in full beer flow, some plank will throw them in the bin. I lost about 10 the first time. But they are cheap enough to replace and fit wine bottles for the extra large beer. :)

i made 40 pints of some random real ale and its come out quite 'dodgy' so I'm very generously going to donate it to my brother in law (well it is nearly christmas) and try again. Just need to drill the pressure barrel to fit a valve and then the lagers going in, while the wine cooks in the demijohns. The thing is, how do you chill a huge barrel of lager to make it palatable?

well I'm sorting out an old beater of a road bike into a project so I'm going to fit it specifically for the run, i'll be looking at parts shortly so i'll trial 46/17 or there a bouts and let you know how i get on. I suspect my long weekend of cycling fun will vary wildly from wheezing up hills and watching my buddy on the fixie fly into bushes. At least there will be beer. :)

I wonder if anyone can help me, or point me to where its already in the forums. Im planning on doing the coast to coast later this year and my buddy is trying to convince me to go fixed, I don't really fancy spinning like a loon down the hills then going over the bars when i try to stop so we have compromised and I'm going to go single speed. The question is whats the best gear setup considering theres some fairly hefty hills en route?

Hi Guys,
Brand shiny new to the forum and just reading through the posts. Currently riding a ten yr old mountain bike but my buddy got me into ss and fg. Gave me a tatty old racer as a project and I'm off to a flying start. Of course its below zero out there when i finish work but its a good excuse to sit in the shed and tinker. Anyway just thought id make myself know.
Tyres and Tubes cost pennies so i'll pick them up new, I figured bearings would need replacing and was correct when i stripped the frame and the bearings just disintegrated. I imagine i'll probably replace the wheels i have as they are quite battered and its seems to be cheaper to just buy new wheels with the hubs fitted than buying hubs and relacing the wheel (something i have been warned is a genuine pain in the arse to get right). My major concern is buying parts that don't fit, i'm planning on just measuring all the bits that came off for the sizes but as I'm new to this i don't know which manufacturers to avoid or use. I'll try and get some pictures up eventually but at the moment I'm just trying to get a feel for things. The other forum posts are quite handy for getting some ideas as well.
