Wait your board is H67, is it a b3 revision?
You could have very old stock where the sata controller dies.

Don't think it's a power issue because the first time it worked with just the SSD plugged in. Now, with everything else unplugged, same as before, it doesn't work.
Yes, when you plug in more drives they use more power leaving less for the SSD. All systems have a surge/spike when they turn on.
edit - if you want to test try booting into the UEFI/bios then wait a moment so the hdds are spinning nicely and then boot, hdds will be using less power then and it should boot fine

My guess would be follow this...

How are you powering the drives?
When you plug more drives in is the voltage dropping so the ssd doesn't get all the juice it needs to boot?
Have you got a way of checking the older drives don't pull loads of power to spin up when you hit the power button causing a dip under the voltage needed for the ssd?

I found it a massive drag too, I don’t know if people just want to love everything black mirror now or if people actually really like it.
I was thinking this with the last series but the new one confirmed it. That or it's a story that was crap and didn't get made in the 1st series and then whoever makes black mirror had a hard on for it ever since so made an extra long crap story while being self aware they can slap black mirror name on anything and have a load of people who didn't understand it say it was great as they finished watching game of thrones and want to keep up with the trends.
