I used simple stuff you use to clean the kitchen. A dirt remover. Worked a threat and easy. In the end it was just that, dirt.
It rides beautifully and comfortable, but fast if I want it to, albeit didn't go fast for long yet as I need to calibrate the brakes and possibly get Koolstop pads.
I tried to level the handlebars, are they not?

Re-posting after the LFGSS move to Microcosm.
Got a Brooks B17 saddle as I found the Rolls surprisingly uncomfortable (on the contrary, the white Ergo Rolls is very comfy, even if they look the same.)
The Rolls looked MUCH better on the bike though :(Also managed to find Golden Arrow wheelset with all the bits and in great conditions (yeeee!), so the old ones are now spares in case of issues.

You only need a tensioner if you have vertical dropouts, and can't move the wheel to tension the chain.
You should be able to get a reasonable gear *and *a reasonable chainline, by trying both positions for the ring on the cranks and seeing what gear they line up with.
Certainly good enough to see if you like it.
Yep, the frame I'm planning to use for SS has horizontal dropouts so I can move the wheel to tension the chain.
As above, I will try with my geared bikes a few combinations rear/front and will use what I have to build a SS.
If I decide to go SS then I'll probably get a flip-flop one anyway as 1) the cassette/freewheel is designed to help shifting, and don't want risk it shifting alone and 2) the wheels I have have an Helicomatic hub, for which I doubt I'd be able to find a suitable conversion kit I suppose...

You won't be able to ride fixed or have a coaster with a tensioner so it will just be like not changing gear as you ride. Pick a comfortable gear and ride in it all day, if you can do that and find it nice then single speed could be for you. Beyond that is just a less full handlebar and maybe different style brake levers+bars it should feel the same.
That is also true. Stupid me about not thinking about that! I guess I was only looking at the 'look' of it in order for my brain to 'switch' I'm on a SS.
But yeah, I do usually ride always on the same gear, but I think I will need to switch to a 'faster' one as the one I'm using now, it's for 'easy' commute and translates to spinning harder to go faster.
But yeah. Will try some combinations and try to ride on those for longer periods.

Hi there,
building up a bike, but would like to try it as single speed first. That means I don't want to spend money on flip-flop or Fixed or SS rear wheel or even on a SS/Fixed cassette/freehub.
So was thinking of using the cassette I've got on the rear wheel and the crankset as a SS setup and was wondering what should I look for in terms of possible issues in the short/medium/long term.
Possibly the chain will never have a proper straight chainline, but will that be an issue?
Will this make things more complicated in terms of chain length / teeth (front and read) number?
