Messyrage I am new on here and I think your bike is great. I have no side in any of this and all I have tried to do is decide whether I should make a bid for this joyous set of tubes on wheels.. Problem is all I can see is potential hassle, or risk of hassle and that just make me think 'life's too short' and so I don't bid. I think others may feel the same. Shame, hope the bike ends up in a good home.

2" taller and 1 stone less sounds like the difference between a racing whippet and a fat lab!!
They are great bars and I can't think of anything better for all day riding but given all the aero design cues in the S3 frame I think that the Zipps or the new 3Ts would look better and perform at least as well. The Down side to the Vuka's is that the sahape prevents any standard out front Garmin mount being used leaving the stem as the only option.

I am 6' tall and 13 stone (which may be the problem) and the one thing I would criticise my Ergosum Ltds on my current bike for is that when I am on the drops and really stand on it to get ahead the things flex - and to me that is lost energy that should be pushing the back wheel around. They are fabulously comfortable and suit me for everything else including super long day after day rides.

As a definite Newbie to this building thing and having been lucky enough to have had no problems building my eBay / LFGSS Cannondale bitsa it is with a little trepidation that I am starting to put together a bike for next Spring / Summer.
The frame was ridden once in a triathlon and the stripped and stored, it is completely unmarked and looks like new so on impulse I bought it at less than one third retail. I've had a few offers in my club to take it off my hands with a nice margin but dealing in stuff like that is not my scene ( if I buy something wrong then its nice to get my money back and see it used but buying and selling for its own sake is not for me).
My LBS (who are Cervelo agents) have given me a very fair price to supply all the bits (less my loyalty discount) and build it up free but the price was eye watering - to be fair we are talking 11 speed Di2, aero carbon wheels, Garmin power meter pedals....
I am wondering therefore if I might save a little money and also get some pleasure out of doing it myself over the winter (and here I am lucky because my wife tolerates me doing the work in the comfort of our study). I want it to be light and fast - I know it will probably always be beyond my ability to reach its limit and that it will perhaps end up being loaned to one of our up and coming youth riders, but I want to feel like the only limit on the performance is the rider. The least relevant consideration is long ride comfort - I have a touring and a long training ride bike already.
So please let me have your suggestions, pitfalls to avoid based on prior experience, tips on any sweet deals on parts and any other guidance. This is not going to get done in a week but hopefully by February / March it will be waiting by the door for its first outing.
Right now I am thinking about stem and bars - I have 3T Ergosums on my Enigma which are nice but for this I was thinking of something like the Zipp Vuka Anyone got any experience with these?

Sorry Tomo - I am a Tool, can't think past what I was doing today - there are 2 sets of square taper cranks and rings in my workshop - as you put it, aestheically fucked (because I removed them with a hammer - and then converted to an Ultegra BB). One of them was fairly new - I was going to bin them in the next cleanup. Donate a tenner to this site and let me have your address and they are yours.
-
If you can stretch to £35 I have a brand new fitted for a test build but never pedalled or ridden Tiagra set at 172.5 - if you need to convert from square tapers to splines I can even throw in a used but sound external bearing BB cartridge to suit.
Edited to add - you can see them here - I took them off an hour ago and fitted the Dura Ace I got through this great site.
-
-
Finished - well enough for a test ride. All works well - need to fine tune the fit but should be able to take her on the Club ride at the weekend.
Will put the Dura Ace cranks on when they arrive and perhaps swap out those Hope Skewers as they don't look quite right but overall I'm very happy with my new winter bike - accelerates, handles and stops.

PS - Howard wheels are Elite 3 Zeros from Superstar components - cheap cheerful and light only downside is they wear out fairly quickly - on the other hand so do most things in winter.

That looks great. Apologies if I have missed what tools you need in this thread to sort your brakes. Assuming it is a cable cutter and crimper I bought these as two separate and expensive items and they are nice but the one I use all the time cost me less than £20 at Halfords and it cuts and crimps - perhaps I should put the first two on fleabay.

Thanks Howard,
I was trying to embed them but failed. I clicked on the image logo in the dialogue box as I was writing the tread but when I posted it it didn't work!
I then tried putting the image adresses in but that just resulted in the post above. Then I had to do some work.
Sorry I know this all probably tedious for you old hands.
I thought I would put some progress shots up rather than just a "tadah finished" type pic (especially having read the section guidance notes) and that it would also let others point out any mistakes I was making before I got finished.
PS the old bike was a multi owner much abused hack,
Edited to add that I managed to edit the first post to embed the pictures after Howard posted - was not trying to make his post look out of context.

I am fairly new to cycling. While I had a new bike built I was riding a friends Cannondale that he eventually gave to me. Last spring I started riding my new Enigma but not before I noticed creak from the Dale's BB.
A couple of weeks ago I stripped it down for a check / refurb before the winter and found a large fatigue crack. As a result I decided the whole frame must be nearing the end of its useful life and so stripped everything off it and sent it to be recycled.
10 days or so ago I bought this:

I wanted to put Dura Ace downtube shifters on it but as I can't figure out how just yet I have fitted it with some 105 Brifters on some Cinelli Eubios bars. I also put some Tiagra cranks on it that were lying around and an Ultegra 10 speed casette.
The seat and post are off my old Dale.I then picked up a pair of Dura Ace 7800 mechs which look like they have hardly been used and, although not fitted yet, I have now got a Dura Ace crank set for it and DA 7800 brake calipers.

Today a box has arrived at work with a selle italia saddle for it.

Hopefully I will have a first ride on it soon. Might have to put some guards on it for winter club rides and I will have to keep searching for a pair of 3 spoke synergy wheels!
I could get hooked on this building thing - I've already got a head full of ideas and it is much cheaper and quicker than messing about with old racing cars.

Those Tsubasa bars are seriously cool. Never heard of or seen them before now I have to have some. I'm going to have to look out for a set even if it means I'll have to build another bike just to have a use for them - damn this forum.
