If I remember correctly, after all my experiments with those bars, basic Cinelli plugs worked best, but I never tried DIY route.

Regular bar plugs do the job but they come out easier, and very likely to be lost.
AX handlebars originally had bar ends that go over the top of the bar tape, not inside the bars, like here:

"Freestyle aeropress" = riding fixed but every time you ride the gear inches have changed slightly and maybe the tyres too.

Also there's a weather factor(rainy/sunny), what bike you ride today(steel,carbon,bamboo), and many other variables, just like in beans (variety, processing, altitude, etc).

Freestyle still feels good though.

is that rubber sandwiching the thin part of the hub shell? Or clamping the flanges themselves? Cos if the former, been there, done that, no juice.

I clamped by the flanges.
Maybe I was luckier or used a much longer piece of tube to lever chainwhip :)

Not all is lost.
I've been given a nice hub with sprocket still on, and managed to take it of. Put it back in a vice, between two thick pieces of rubber to avoid damaging flanges, get a chainwhip and a long tube that you could use on the end of it to give you more leverage.

That's what I started to think, but then it would be hard to convince them to sell you complete tube set, I imagine :)
Over long period of times, involving different frame builders and people asking for tubes, it could be possible, but not worth the hassle.
