So tried the brakes for size today and wouldn't you know it the cantilever brazeons are in the way :-((
Looks very likely that these will have to go :-))
Also picked up some DUO Brand Resilite pedals (in clear) which caught my eye in a local BMX shop:

Parts catalogue for this build is nearly complete with only a few more things to go. At this rate my mountain bike is only going to lose its saddle (which is a Selle Italia I've had for a long time).

Brakes have arrived:

So now I need to make sure everything fits ie will the brakes work if I leave the cantilever braze ons in place.
Bars and stem should be here next week.

Also going to run this Miche crankset:

Aim is to run on the inside smaller of the two rings but to leave the larger one in place. Unless that is anyone has a reason why this won't work?

if its the rear dropouts you can just slide one side of the axel further forward or back in the dropout. I've had frames with slightly off alignment and that sorts it ok.
Hmmm...
Is "Dawes" engraved into the seatstay endcaps?
Are the dropouts marked "Dawes"?
I think you might be right and this isn't a Galaxy.
Nothing on the seatstay endcaps but I haven't checked the dropouts.
Not too concerned if it's not a Dawes as it's still a really lightweight frame (first where I've picked / held it upright - rear drop outs upwards - with one hand). Would be good to know though.

As you'll see it's in need of some work:

Trying to work out if I need to straighten the drop outs as when I initially offered up the rear wheel it was a bit off centre?! Not too bad when I took more time over it today though.
Next on my list is to pick up a quill stem, seatpost and bars. Which I can hopefully pick up relatively cheaply.
Thoroughly enjoying this build :-))

So convinced it's not a Dawes now but hey ho.
Anyhow; the forks are now off and next on the list is to remove the bottom braket (once I work out how).
I've been quoted £48 to powder coat the frame and forks either in a single colour or in two different colours. Which I think is quite good and given the time to remove rust quite worthwhile.
Just need to work out if I'm keeping the braze ons for brakes or not?!
Is it possible to keep the braze ons but still use long reach brakes to fit 700c wheels?
Pictures to follow.

Many many thanks for all the advice. I think I now have a clearer view on how I'll proceed.
- Split frame from forks
- Clean and remove rust
- Pull together the parts I need
- Build it up
- Only then hink about paint etc.
Promise this is my last question. For a firsts build would you opt for a kit consisting of wheels, crankset, chain etc. try to source 2nd hand or buy parts separately?
- Split frame from forks

So managed to get the lock nut and the washer off. The threaded race is proving more difficult though. There are three slots/notches which I assume is to allow a wrench to be attached. I'll take another look later maybe after spraying with WD40.
Also wondering if anyone has a view on removing cantilever brake braze ons? Is this worth the hassle or can I use?! I'd like 700c wheels but don't know if this makes the mounts for the brakes useless or can I reuse?

Couple of quick questions.
What's the best means of removing the forks? From what I've looked at on the internet it's a simple matter of stripping the top end and then using a mallet to knock out the forks from the frame. Does this sound correct? There's no way the forks could be screwed in to the frame is there?
Also any thoughts on using a single speed kit from single speed components (or similar) or is it best to try to source the bits I need 2nd hand to keep the costs in check?

I need to check out the price to get it done. If it's not too expensive I'll go down that route otherwise I'll clean up the rust and spray it.
As for bars, stem, seat, seat post etc I'm going to start amassing the parts and from what I can see these need not be expensive.
My concern I think will be the bottom half; I'm assuming it's just a matter of measuring between the forks to get a size for the front wheel and hub? And similarly at the rear or is it more tricky than this?
I'm definitely not keen to hack anything off. Issue I have is I didn't think cantis would fit if I changed to 700c wheels.
Also not too concerned if I don't use the brakes I bought as I can keep them in my parts bin (maybe use them if I build another).
I'd be more than happy if I can get cantilever brakes that'll fit with the braze ons and the wheels I have.
