Cracked out some paper. There are assumptions (rigid and weightless material) but with some reasonable values I get a factor of ~2.5 between your counterbalance and your load. That is, you need 2.5kg on your windowledge to hold up 1kg of load. I have assumed the optimistic end of the coefficients of friction (found here, assuming wood on wood for the windowledge and wood on brick for the wall) and there is no safety factor in there.

In conclusion: what @rive_gauche said.

You'll need plenty of weight on the back to keep it balanced. Your brace is only stiffening the overhanging part and can't work unless the cantilever is fixed by something.
You may as well run your bracing the other direction and support the front edge of the desk...

A quick Google finds this but it's pricey. No external power = 2.5", but they're only just coming out in this kind of capacity.
You're better off having a huge external drive that plugs in, and a smaller hard drive/USB drive to carry around that needs no external power.

Don't worry. If you use the switch I linked up there ^^ somewhere you'll be fine. If you need more ports than that can give (4, one of the 5 goes to the router) then there are 8 port versions. Pick one and check back here.

I'm sure @stevo_com will sort you with the appropriate non crossover cable you need.

Not sure I entirely understand what you're trying to describe, but you all you need to do is plug one port of the switch into a port on the modem/router (any patch cables in between via ducting etc are effectively transparent) and add on the rest of your devices. The rest sorts itself. If you want to add a second switch downstairs (beyond the three remaining ports already on your modem/router) then that should be fine. Think of each switch as being like a 4-way gang plug for a power socket (only with more brains). There are limits to daisy-chaining them, but I doubt you'll reach that.

If you're getting it hardwired into the house then you could do much worse than having a few other cables run, maybe to any other bedrooms/a study/wherever. I wouldn't bother with cat6 if someone pushes it, cat5e if perfectly capable for the distances involved and if you want a future network to transfer above gigabit levels then you may as well go optical (don't!).
