"@T_K..statement of the obvious, to what purpose exactly?2
You seemed to bemoan the fact that the bike's marque could be up for debate - that the matter was as trivial as how one might pronounce a word such as potato. I wrote that I didn't think the analogy really worked. My 'purpose' therefore was to make explicit that whether the bike was a Vitus or a Peugeot was something that could be important to some people; a potential buyer who was specifically after a Vitus, for example.

Fair enough, but it's still pushing it. After taking the time to log on before you left the house, you'd have to establish where exactly the hold-up was, then plot a new route, which may in turn be interrupted elsewhere...
Isn't one of the points of commuting on a bike the fact that we're fairly inured to all of this? We're able to manoeuvre round static vehicles, improvise short-cuts, dive down side-roads.

That's helpful, benbrangwyn, thanks. I might need to replace the rear cassette/freewheel, and the rear wheel also needs truing, so I thought this might be something I could do whilst I'm at it.
I've been riding the bike for a year and a half, fairly regularly, in mostly dry conditions. However, because the bike is 25-odd year's old, I have no idea whether the hubs have ever been properly seen to, even if ostensibly they look okay.

Yeah, you said that you were providing the original stem - I just can't believe the one that's currently on there. Your brother in law must have very short arms.
I was actually thinking of buying one of these when last year's models were being sold off cheap at the start of the year - they've had some good reviews. As it happens, a better (but more expensive) offer turned up elsewhere and I went with that instead.
I like that matt black finish.

Even the blue boxes stare in admiration.
