Got some pieces on during lunch. The steerer is cut short only just fits a 40mm stack stem.
The Raceface Seatpost pictured that came with the frame (colourfully described by a forum member as having an integrated cock ring !) is 27.0 diameter. I’m sure this frame measures as 27.2 but can’t seem to get a 27.2 post in. Probably needs a good cleaning out but ran out of time.

Yep You are totally right - logically it makes sense, I’m also familiar with that frustration. I think I already know I’ll end up with the Principia. I guess if I was being logical and sensible , I would sell it all and get something like a Pinnacle on the bike to work scheme. But like at lot of you I like building up outdated parts and wasting a little money but having some fun doing it :)

Did anyone win this ? Saw it too late, but of a bargain, Chris King, Fizik etc ..would like to see it fully revived

Right, this thread is intended as an incentive to have a clear out. I need a decent commuting / winter bike with mudguards and have enough parts to build up two bikes. I’m hoping by building and test riding both I can decide which to keep and which to sell. Plus will give me something to do on my lunch breaks while the weather’s rubbish
Frames:
A Principia RSL-AS. Picked this up recently . It is essentially an RSL with clearance for mudguards and slightly more relaxed geo. Came with a full carbon ITM fork with mudguard eyelets. Beautifully made anodised frame. Thought it looked a bit like a ti colour in the sellers photo (below) but it’s a rather uninspiring dirty gold/bronze.
A Cannondale 3.0. Had this frame for sometime, it’s had a hard life often living outdoors. So much paint had bubbled up and flaked off I decided to get it resprayed some time ago and it’s just sat there . Planned to sell it after buying the Principia but after applying new decals it it turned out to look pretty good in a Matt RAL 5025. They forgot to do the forks so they don’t currently match! Interestingly It will just fit 35mm mudguards with some creative use of zip ties and axiom axle runners on the fork (frame has threaded mounts)
I’ve got a choice of 3 groupsets to use : Dura Ace 770 , a mixed bag Campag silver 9 speed group and 10 speed Rival in Black . Currently thinking all black Rival on the Cannondale and either DA or Campag on the Principia . DA seems a shame to use on a winter bike but it’s a little tatty and aging . Other components will be from parts bin or sourced to keep the cost down.

Recently picked this up to use as a winter build (seller’s photo) . It’s a 2004 RSL -AS which is basically an RSL but has clearances for mudguards and slightly slacker geo. Came with a full carbon ITM fork and principia headset , which are supposedly made by Chris King .
Thought the colour, called “Oasis Green” looked a bit like ti in the photo but in reality it sits between dirty gold and a metallic turd, depending on the light! No that keen on it tbh, but seems a shame to respray as after cleaning it up the anodising is in excellent condition with barely any marks. Leaning towards silver over black groupset ..

For anyone else using the removeable raceblades due to close clearances, I found this useful bodge somewhere on a forum:
By combining the seatpost/ front mech portion of a crud racer (which is available as a spare for a few quid from crud) with a bracket using zip ties - I used one from a broken raceblade long, but would be easy to make something, it gives you almost full protection on the back wheel. I actually really like this part of the crud racers as it give the front mech full coverage . Never had much luck with the rest of their guards though !

Red's not really my colour and its looking tired so going to go for a Cadbury-esque candy purple powder coat with a metallic base. Powder coat for durability, price and no lugs to worry about!
Inspired by the colour of this CAAD Optimo track on pedal room
https://www.pedalroom.com/bike/2004-cannondale-optimo-track-11949and @russmeyer 's excellent Cannondale 2.8 build, It'll be SRAM 10 speed and a mixture from the parts bin / classifieds. Gum walls to set off the purple.
A very quick photoshop mock up (sorry to whoever's photo I've bastardised!)

Decided to document this build, it will be an all- rounder, for commuting, longer rides and general whizzing about. Something that will be fun to ride that I wont be to precious about so mostly 2nd hand parts. I already have a Cannondale 3.0 frame which is has been great, but wanted something similar that I could run modern forks on and with proper 130mm spacing.
Picked up a nice CAAD 5 frame with Columbus tusk forks from @Sensi.

Thread dredge- i recently bought some Muc-Off Bio grease for the first time . Comes in a nice tube with easy application nozzle but it's pretty thin- it washed oyt of my lower headset very quickly and the bearing started to corrode. Not sure I'd trust in in wheel bearings either.
Looking for something thicker/more weather proof for bbs headsets etc- has anyone tried White Lightning Crystal grease?

I had to size up on the Spexcel Gabba , have an xl which now fits pretty well . It's good on cold mornings, haven't tested in the rain yet. I doubt it's got any dwr treatment on it though . It got pretty hot on a warmer ride, noticed my phone and stuff in my pockets were wet and it was pretty damp all over when I got home . It doesn't have the ventilation panels a Gabba has .. but it's £20 ! Cool/cold weather only I'd say
Looking to replace a left hand rx100 downtube shifter, it's friction so any would do but would rather have a matching pair so 7 speed pair would also work. Thanks
