Hey ho - I also commuted on a motor bike for many years. One morning overtaking at almost walking pace a black cab in Smithfield in slow traffic the cabbie reached out and emptied the dregs from his coffee cup, timing it perfectly to land in my lap. We smiled and shook hands and wished each other a fabulous day. As you do.....

So the guy in front of me on an mtb with hi-viz coming south from Highbury and Islington stn at 8.45 today down Canonbury Road rides thru the red at Essex road, the wrong way around the ped island S of Popham Rd, through the next zebra when school-kids are crossing, through the red at New North Road and almost takes out another tiny wee school kid on a scooter who was easily visible and very likely to do something daft. I caught him up - had a word and he berated me for daring ....'You f*cking dissing me dude?' or some similar crap. Sometimes I just want to kill a cyclist. Ooops no - I mean kill a complete Neanderthal on a bike. Nope - sorry all Neanderthals...words fail me....

Joined Julian Sayarer (Life Cycles and one-time Round the World record holder) for a few days of his 1000 mile UK book promotion tour. Chester down to Ludlow, crossing in and out of Wales and England and in and out of various good and not so good pubs. My first time bivvy-bagged. Have to say I loved it!

Took my first ride on the roads on fixie this morning. Always ridden single speed. Had a few practice circuits in an empty car park to get the feel over the past few days - well only 1 actually. I have a front brake. I set off from Archway - it started raining - Feck. Of course the first obstacle - a red light - had me concentrating really hard - felt like I had 3 legs. I was all over the place. Off on green and in the traffic - steady pace - slower then my normal - and on the brake almost all the time. After a few hundred yards I'm thinking this is not so bad oh there's a pot-hole I will just coast over th....shhiiiiit!!! Phew - pedalling again and even skirted the hole. Pedalling and braking all the time. Recalling those smug bastards on the Bridges ride writing their name in black rubber on the embankment tarmac. How the f*ck? Then it started to feel OK - but never better than OK - I had a slow ride in to the city. Coffee. I reckon it's going to take a while and I will be taking it easy for some time. But I'm investing only time end energy in this - hopefully not skin!

Persuaded (it wasn't too difficult - she loves me!) my girlfriend to get on a bike - she bought a Charge Plug 3 weeks ago. She's very keen although unsurprisingly a little nervous of London traffic. To help we rode out together for 2 or 3 rides - in Sunday traffic - and she managed to smile and get out of the saddle and mingle with slow moving traffic and then get away when there was space. All good. This morning she decided to cycle to work. Standing with one foot on the ground behind a car at a T junction waiting for an opportunity to pull out and suddenly the car parked on her left reverses out of the parking space bumps her back wheel and pushes her a yard or so before she tumbles under the bike. He stops - winds his window down - says sorry love and drives off. She's fine - tells me she found a voice she didn't know she had and vocab she hadn't used for some time. But WTFFFFFFFFF.....

Oh my goodness this bike is a wonder. I climb on it and smile. Taking off is like winding up a coiled spring. It's really hard on the legs and then at a point it springs forward. Then the guys who left me at the lights are suddenly alongside. Then in my dust. It's a mental bike. This has character. Is so sensitive to tyre pressures, body position, pedal down force. Get that wrong and twitch the bars and it punishes with a lunge to one side or another. But always surging forwards. Maybe it's just me. A lack of experience of higher geared bikes. But I'm ready for this. Bloody love it.

Now that sort of post can unhinge a person - especially a person sitting at a desk in the city with the only excitement in the diary a day out to Clacton on Sea with fellow desk drivers. I hope to hell you survive in one piece and well enough to meet your targets whilst still taking time to enjoy the view. Good biking......

I didn't see any aggro - and I was there with a first timer who really enjoyed the experience. I'm not denying there was some silliness but it was small in comparison to the scale of the turnout - massive!! 2000 plus? Please don't let the actions of a few idiots put you off - this is easily a sensible ride for the majority of supporters.
