Its out!! Its bloody well out! So in the end i tried ammonia soaked for 2 days. No difference. Then coke for 2 days. No difference. Then GT85 for 2 days. No difference. Then i tried heating it with a propane torch then freezing it with plumbers pipe freeze and then heating it again. After that had cooled i clamped it in a vice and i could move it about 1mm back and forth. Slowly after about half an hour of wiggling and spraying it with WD40 it started to move a bit more and eventually managed to extract the whole thing. Stem and forks both intact!! I couldn't see any evidence that any of the soaking had penertrated in to the corrosion so in this case i think it was the heat that did it.

You're taking pretty high concentrations to dissolve a quill.
Don't drop it on the floor or anywhere.
Try taking it to your LBS, they'll be able to handle it without acid.
Pretty sure there are other ways, tried unscrewing the bolt nearly all the way an then wacking it with a hammer?Already taken it to one shop and they couldn't get it out. I've got the bolt out and the wedge has dropped. Its stuck because the ali has reacted with the steel so i need to find some way to break that bond. I'll try the coke then the heating and oiling and update.

I have a alloy quill stem stuck. I'd really like to get it out without cutting it off as its pantographed. I have tried various methods proposed on this forum and others but no luck. The only thing left to try is caustic soda to dissolve the stem (obviously this means goodbye stem) or i have seen some mavericks suggest sulphuric acid. My question to any chemists out there is will sulphuric acid damage the steel frame?

Yeah i did see that. Just thought that it should look like this.

Just found out my blue Vitus 979 has been nicked from the car park under my flats. Don't know how to post images. But its was a 58cm frame with blue mavic open pro rims on ultegra hubs, white bar tape and saddle with an old campag 8 speed group set, blue look pedals. I realise i will never see it again but if someone offers it too you don't buy it.

Thinking about buying a Colnago Master in good condition with the following setup. Any thoughts on value. I'm no expert, was wondering what the forum thought.
Dura ace - chain set 53/39 , 9 speed sti shifters, rear mech, front mech, seat post and brakes
Ultegra hubs on mavic open pro wheels
I think the cassette (12- 25 ) is Dura ace as is the chain but I could not be 100% sure
Saddle is San Marco
Campagnolo Chorus headset
Look pedals

I'm 28, I currently can't swing my leg over my bike. Have taken to laying my bike on the ground stepping over it and then picking it up. Makes me look like i've never ridden a bike before but does the trick.
Thanks for your opinion, i think i will try a indoor trainer to start with. I'm not grieving too much about not cycling through the winter but am very keen to get back for the spring.

Many thanks
