Hmm.
Maybe that's what I should change.
To allow logged-in members to see the edit history of posts.
Any objections that I really should be considering before just doing this?
Yes. Someone posted my real name in a thread after I'd contacted him by email (signed off with my real name). I asked him to edit the post since I prefer to remain anonymous on public websites. He was happy to do this, but being able to view pre-edit posts would effectively reverse this.

You are over complicating it, I don't think Ffm is asking for the actually price to be put in, just the asking price left.
This. Or "£10>£5>£3SOLD" if you want. I guess part of my problem is that "mates rates" are difficult to judge.
Nope, thats ebay.
This place is strictly mates rates or go elsewhere.
(or it used to be)in my case maybe 50% of things go for less than the asking price. A seller of the same item will see £50 sold when in fact it was £35 and think "Why should i take less than £50 for mine if his sold for that" and even use it as reference to argue the case for £50.
not arguing for or against just thinking aloud
Continuing the thinking aloud, someone can argue for a specific value all they want, but they can't make people buy.
This is a bit controversial and I don't want to change LFGSS as it is soooooo much nicer than selling on ebay. Retrobike and bikeradar aren't too bad, but prices are higher overall. There are loads of good reasons for selling here: the feelgood factor of being part of a community; knowing that you'll be helping someone get their perfect bike or just keep it on the road; shifting stuff quickly; not being compelled to offer postage or accept paypal; and meeting some cool people. But none of these compel people to sell at mates rates. If people overprice things they just won't sell.
Edit: Hilly Ben, I am sorry about those wheels. They were massively undervalued and it seemed to be for no reason other than that the seller had no idea how much they were worth. I don't think we need to reply on sellers' mistakes to make LFGSS a good place to buy stuff. As I said above, loads of stuff is sold here at bargain prices for perfectly good reasons.
-
As far as I can see, the only practical way for that to happen would be for it to be customary (i.e. people are coerced into it). There isn't a software solution is there?
Yes indeed, I wasn't suggesting a software solution, only that it should become customary. I don't think you need to coerce people into it, because I don't think people do it out of principle. I think you just need to point out that it could be useful.
-
-
I don't know if this is the place for this kind of request, but anyway.
Can it be made standard practice to leave the asking price in "for sale" ads after the item has sold? The fact that everyone replaces this with "SOLD" makes it impossible to judge the value of something that you have to sell.
I don't know if this is appropriate for LFGSS as it isn't a forum in which everyone tries to get every last penny for their spare components/bikes/kit etc. It's really nice to be part of a community where stuff is passed on at low prices just so that people can keep their bikes running. But it is infuriating not to have any idea of the going rate for stuff, partly because you can then over-value items which never sell as a result.
-
There is an awful lot of stuff cross posted on bikeradar and retrobike (I don't check gumtree so much).
Would it be possible to put the rule about not cross-posting "for sale" ad above the box where you enter your text to create a new ad or, better still, put it actually in the box so that you have to delete it to enter your own text? It could at least save a lot of hassle for people who simply don't know that rule.

Ooh you lucky bastard!
Good price I reckon, apparently the 531 pro tubeset has 753 stays. I took a punt, but lightweight tubing is probably not what I need for my riding.Let us know how it turns out.

I think that's Reynolds 531Professional tubing from the decal. Nice!

Blah blah...do you think any one would buy it?...
Yes, stick it here for a better idea. Looks like a nice frame with some good bits. I don't know much about Hardisty Cycles except that they used to sponsor Jason McRoy. A seat tube measurement would be useful.

This is exactly what I dislike about the Pedros tool - the stepped spanner can only apply force on 2 of the six corners on a nut, so it damages nuts far more easily than a normal six-sided spanner.
Agreed, I think this wins out generally because it uses a standard non-proprietary drive (the hex-bit holder) and gives you a good long lever to turn it with. I have a mini socket set which uses this kind of drive so it would be no problem to leave out the bits I don't need (like the torx bit) and add ones that I do.
The absence of a lockring spanner is a potential problem, but I reckon you could design an additional component that uses a 15mm nut interface to drive it. So, essentially, the end of a lockring spanner with a 15mm hexagon on one face so you can turn it with the main tool. If the hexagon was set in a recess that fitted around the rounded end of the tool or you could additionally secure it through the hole where the bit holder fit,s that would be properly clever.
However, designing and manufacturing this extra piece would probably be much easier if the tool was flat. Mark, why is it cranked?

bikesnobnyc on the nutter
I like the versatility, but I love the fact that you can very easily lose everything
I quite like it though, it looks like a good ergonomic shape for getting some torque onto the bits. I reckon it could be improved by fitting a second smaller tyre lever into the big slot in the middle.Edit: Although I'm just a bit concerned about the strength of the thin wall around the hole where the bits slot in.
Edit#2: They could also include a couple of inserts that fit into the 15mm ring spanner and reduce it down to 10mm and 8mm for adjusting the nuts on some components e.g., sks mudguards, the cable clamp bolts on some cantis.

There are plenty of cases in which you would say a dead plant is still alive. Cut flowers are still alive. Seeds and spores are alive. They aren't living in the way that an animal is before it is dead, though.
If you hooked a bit of you (your arm say) up to the right system there's no reason why it couldn't stay alive after the rest of you had happily decomposed. I don't see what makes animals special in this respect.
Ask Descartes, or Derrida, or Deleuze.. etc. It's a big ol' question. I'm just trying to assert that the idea of an animal being anything other than material once dead isn't a rare or unconsidered one.
Fair enough, I just think that it's problematic to assert that it's anything more than material when it's "alive" in the first place.
Nicely summarised. Good decision Velocio. I wouldn't do anything more than add a note somewhere: "Consider leaving the asking price up after your items have sold to help future sellers price thing sensibly". I don't think this will stop people selling stuff cheap, giving bits and bobs away, running raffles, donating profits to the forum and all the other awesomeness that makes LFGSS such a cool forum.
In that case, what purpose does the "What's my XYZ worth?" thread serve? I'm not looking for a precise prediction of how much an item will actually sell for, just a rough idea of what a sensible opening price might be. If I want to sell something quickly I can ask for less, if I'm reluctant to let it go I can ask for more and accept that it might not sell so fast. Stuff shifts really quickly here, which is one of its great features, but sometimes it shifts so quickly that by the time you click on a thread all you can see is:
OP: X for sale, good condition £SOLD
2nd Post (blahdibloo): dibs, PMed
3rd Post (OP): Sold to blahdibloo
That's not much help in working out the value of anything.
