I'm going to start ebaying my old underwear, but with funny back stories. I am going to do it under a female pseudonym (that's greek) or nom de plume (french and probably spelled incorrectly). I think I should adopt a sort of Bridget Jones persona and put them up for sale like; "This is from my men's underwear collection. I have a pair from each man I have ever slept with, but now I am getting married and my fiance wants me to get rid". To go on, "This pair is an interesting one; the owner was a...." insert weird boyfriend story here.

In fact, monitor the conversation next time you are talking to a passenger. You will notice often, that your passenger will pause talking, and so will you, when you come to tricky road junctions and the like. Particularly if the passenger is a driver themselves. That does not happen when you are talking to someone on the phone, as they are not aware where you are and what you are doing at your end of the line.

That rusty old shopper, ha ha! He has a starting bid of £30, which might not be as stupid as it looks. Not because the bike is worth anything, but because the seller might have decided to give it a go, he doesn't want to get involved unless he gets £30, if not he will chuck it in a skip. It can be a pita to have to post or wait in while someone collects, when it is only a coupla quid.

He slams the seat at 1.10. How did he do that without loosening and tightening it again?

Well I might be wrong, but we are a big outfit, and I thought this is why we always have to list the people who attend a meal or other "expense". If the clients outnumber the people from our place, then it is allowable (roughly speaking). If I decide to conduct an internal meeting over a couple of beers (rare these days) then it is not allowed - in terms of VAT and/or corp tax. I asked just now, and they said indeed that's right.
-
Yeah, so you can claim the VAT, but only if the expense is not "sole purpose of the business entertainment is to entertain a non-employee". That is to say, if you take clients out you can claim.
Anyway, I was not referring to reclaiming VAT, but as to whether or not the expense is allowed to be included as a business cost before the payment of corporation tax. That is, it is an allowable cost.
-
“Contractors can certainly claim expenses for business-related entertainment,” explains James Abbott, head of tax at contractor accountant Abbott Moore LLP. “However, their limited company won’t be able to claim corporation tax relief for entertainment-related costs.”
“But common sense should prevail; trying to claim for a £14,000 lunch is likely to draw unwelcome attention from HMRC.”

I just checked with our accountants. Although we are a "proper" company, lots of people, not a contractor's services company. If I take clients out*, and buy them luch, I can claim it, as an expense, and so can the company, against tax.
Your quote refers to contractors - are they and their companies subject to slightly different rules.

Well sure. In fact, you should not have rung them, or answered your phone. But people do, and it distracts them from what they are doing, and they end up killing people. It's not good.
