I'm riding about a meter from the curb as a I approach, I slow to let a kid cross and aim to pass behind her while she's still crossing. Bad earthloop. A motorbike comes from behind me and zips through without stopping, causing the kid to leap back into my path. I didn't hit her, but it was quite close.

No it's definitely dipped. Never heard of a defuser before, but as a driver not being a cunt and blinding on-coming cars is important to me so I'll investigate.

I run mine on medium, diffused with a slightly opaque bottle top and three layers of slightly opaque milk bottle plastic. It looks much brighter from 45 degrees off front than an undiffused one on low.

Anyone know where I could get hold of a 10 foot lenght of 20x20cm square polystyrene? (It could be in foot long sections if need be).

Maybe your local dump ? Ours has a specific place for polystyrene. Not sure how they feel about people picking up instead of dropping off though.

How long is your commute? I try to stick mine on charge mine when I get home/work or for half hour before I head out if it's running low. I find the battery life lasts well enough and it charges from 0–100% in 2 hours.

6 hours would do me about 3 days, so not a big issue. Just a bit of a surprise since my rear lights using 2 AAA rechargeables last a couple of weeks.

The Moon Shield is an awesome rear light and at £35 it's very reasonable. Small, USB rechargeable, well built, super waterproof, built-in bag clip, fantastic power if necessary and has a well designed, strong, easily removable and detachable rubber strap.

The only way you could get this to work would be to create a very lubricated interface between your front tyre and the back of the bus.

Unless you pull the front wheel up off the road and rest it on the back of the bus.

We got one of ours from freecycle, charity shops are also worth trying. Very old ones are better, because they can cook at a lower temperature because they predate some health and safety wank.

The new Hope Vision 1 have the upgrade that we all wanted; a low battery warning indicator and the request to make it uglier of course.

Apparently it's also brighter with the same run time.

The old style ones are down to £54 on wiggle.
