Thanks all!
Particularly for suggesting Straton, who are new to me: everything in budget appeals and I'm digging the Seventies vibe.
Are Helson and Armida connected? The similarity between the websites is striking.
Apart from Straton (especially Syncro and Speciale), a Steinhart Ocean One green (39?) and Laco Aachen Blaue Stunde are on the shortlist: it seems I'm drawn to a bit of colour.
Nothing from Timefactors is striking enough for me. And apart from the overwhelming choice, I'm don't think Seiko is "special" enough (and I have a BFK). An Armida A10 would be in the running If it weren't for the big date and I'm not sure about quartz, for the occasion. I haven't ruled out an A1.
what would you buy if money was no object, and why?
That's a rabbit hole I don't have time to explore: I've only got until December! :)

Window shopping for some wrist jewelry, to mark a significant birthday at the end of the year.
£500 budget seems appropriate: if only I had £5,000 to spunk on a watch.
I have no need of a dress watch; I'm OK with vintage, but don't have the expertise to dodge a lemon; not overly fussed about size, but I lean (don't lean) towards the more beefy end of the spectrum.
Either way, I'm after something with "presence".
Answers on a postcard to the usual address.
TIA

Then we all got in a hidden hot spring in a old farmers hut next to the river...being typically British and wearing lots of Lycra meant it took me a while to get in with three other men in the buff! Damn it was hot!!
Reminds of the time I ended up in a sauna on a Russian freighter...
... being beaten with Birch twigs by naked sailors.

testers riding fixed are said to be "on the cog", and if you don't call the IS2000 mount sprockets "bolt-on" because they are attached with screws, then you end up calling them "screw-on", which would be confusing.
Quite, hence the "pedant" qualification.
But the experience of being "schooled" by an ex-Ford toolmaker, is not one I'll readily forget.
...the misuse of ISO when people mean IS2000...

Am I making a sprocket/cog mistake?
That and screw vs. bolt.
More constructively, here's the ISO mount sprocket thread which may be useful to you and, judging by the title, is refreshingly pedant-free.

continental grand prix classic... continental 4 seasons... [Schwalbe] marathons
You're comparing very different tyres.
GP Classic are just shit and 4 Seasons and Marathons, whilst great tyres in their own right, are tractor tyres in comparison to Masters.
The Veloflex are "open tubular" tyres, so made in the same way as a tubular but not sewn up: a race tyre compared to the retro-bollocks of GP Classic and the commuter/touring emphasis of the other two (ie very hard wearing and puncture resistant).
Despite what Colin says, GP4000S II are fantastic tyres with low rolling resistance and certainly more durable than Masters.
Whether they "feel" the same as Masters I couldn't say, but they definitely don't look as nice.

The bronze cases are quite striking...
