I'd have thought your frame is fine with 700c wheels, but you may need long drop brakes if it was designed for 27" wheels. I'll measure both my sets including wheels so you can judge for yourself.

Hmmm thinking about it, an angle grinder on a bike is looking for trouble. Maybe I'm not best to advise, my only welding knowledge is MIG welding a spitfire, and that wasn't very neat.

If its a weld I'd of thought you'd need a file or angle grinder, but I guess that depends on how bad it is. If people have suggested sand paper I assume it's a pretty neat weld n the first place?

Nope, 27" are 630mm diameter, 700c are 622mm! And mtb 26" are 559mm

your tyres eare as the OP stated more likely for and old 3 speed from the 50s and 60s.

If you want cheap and narrow for the wheels you have I'd just head to Wilkos, or Decathlon. It's probably the most common size. you probably want 26 x 1.8, but worth checking the width will work though as your frame is likely designed for 700c or 27" rims.

Yep. I'd just posted a warning in your current project post, looks like I may be to late. :(

I do just have the clearance to run 26's, will probably go 700c when funds for a decent wheelset become available. As a stopgap I've bought some (very) cheap 26 x 1 1/4 tyres which i can run for the time being. So hopefully 18t on the back will work out okay.

Re. Brakes, probably just a front for the time being, I've dug some nice retro looking side pulls out of the parts box, along with some levers, shall post pics at some point.

If you're running 26" mtb wheels check the tyre sizes first, that sounds like the old style 26" tyres.
