It's no biggy, just felt a bit weird him telling me I wasn't worth his time. Oh well, I guess I will pop in and buy some gloves or something. Cheer him up a bit.
It's a bit out of the way from Salford, I am going to call some people up tomorrow. But if I can't find someone closer, I will be down by the end of the week. As a student, what I really mean is, see you next week.
Thanks. -
Hey there guys,
I'm newly moved to Manchester from London, and I have brought with me a stuck seatpost. Naturally I went down to my LBS, now currently Keep Pedalling, where I was told "repairing my bike was not worth their time". Naturally I feel a bit shocked at their absolutely bluntness, but life goes on.
Normally I would attempt to remove the stuck seatpost myself, and I have a pretty good idea how to do it. Except it isn't exactly practical when my new room is the size of a peanut, and bikes are not allowed to be kept in any of the communal areas of my flat. (No one likes Castle Irwell)
Can someone recommend me a local frame builder/repairman or bike shop that can help me. I have a few in mind that, but a nudge in the right direction always helps.
Thank you very much,

Hey there Webof,
My girlfriend is selling a Phillips bike with 3 gears. It was made in 1957. I have had a go on it a while ago, its not exactly light. More of a cruiser, a mean bruiser of a bike which demolishes potholes and speed bumps.
On occasions, I am told that the chain seems to disengage in a way that allowed the pedals to continued to be pedalled without driving the chain. It sounds really bad, but this is the best way I can describe the problem from what I am told.
It has no structural dents, the only damage is a slightly amount of rust in places, the handlebars have seemed survived without any blemishes however.
She hasn't told me much about it such as size, but as a rough guide, she is 5 ft 2 on a cold day and the bike fits her well. But I will get on her to measure it soon.
Here are a few pics. She hasn't taken the most useful pictures, if there are any more you would like, I will get her on the case.
The bike is in South East London.
Thanks buddy. -
I went to look at the bike doubting it would fit, but I stood over top tube and I have about 1 inch clearance. So regardless of what he said, I highly doubt the frame was 59cm. Either that or I have grown, which I doubt. Took it for a ride and it was fine, except seat was to high. I asked him to adjust the seat and the seatpost was stuck. So he said he was going to spray some gas or liquid to loosen it up I think. And once he has managed to lower the seat he said he would bring it around for me to try again.
Cranks and brakes seem fine. Wheels are quite nice. Thanks for all your help guys, its much appreciated.

I appreciate where your coming from but I have fairly long legs for my height, and I also have ridden a friends bike which is 57cm, and that feels very nice.
But of course I came here to ask for advice because I don't really know what I am talking about.
I will consider what you said, but I told the guy I would look at his bike, so I will.
But now I am doubting weather I will buy it. -

check the bearing cranks wheels etc for play even a little side to side movement in either could cause you a bit of a bill to repair / replace / re grease
ride it around a bit try all the gears from first to 14th change up and down make sure they all line up properly although those could be friction shifters as opposed to indexed gears so they should work just dandy
I will check the cranks. As for the gears, can't they be adjusted? H and L screws? As you can tell I am no expert.
Make sure you can adjust seat-post.
I just bought a(n awesome) frame where I can't (currently plusgas-ing) and am probably having to hacksaw the bastard out this weekend...Ahh I completely forgot about that. Thank you for reminding be, I'll bring my tools ;)

Hey guys,
How much do you think this bike is worth?
I am buying it for £110.
When looking at the bike, what should I look for to see if it is a good bike or not? Can anyone give me any othe tips on buying a second hand bike?http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/peugeot-531-road-bike-racer-bicycle/112565893

Hey guys,
I am looking for a cheap beaterish bike for below £100.
It doesn't have to be beautiful or anything, but working brakes would be nice.
Geared or fixed I don't mind.
Size ~54cm or ~21 inches, which correctly me if I am wrong is a medium?
I can collect from South East London at the end of the week, or Manchester in the next couple of days or in 2 weeks time.
Can be contacted here or on 07915408083Thanks

I don't think this would have happened if you had relaxed your knees properly? Seems to me you are riding with very tense legs. And rest your body weight on your ass, not the soles of your feet.
It seemed to happen when I had just pushed down with my leg and as my pedal came up, I naturally locked my knee and tried to coast, so when the pedal came back up, I couldn't really bend my knee to accommodate.
Is this because of my technique or because of my seat height or something?Out of interest, is the bike okay?
I got a nick on my new seat, but I got my glasspaper and wire wool out and the handlebars were as good as new. Fuck tape.
The constant pedal action nearly threw me straight out the saddle, i remember flying along with one leg strapped in, one waving in the air, bouncing up and down like a right twat.
Hahaha, its like your describing my first ride!

also what ratio are you on?? I tried to start with a 52x16 and found it really hard as it was impossible to skid....go for something lower and that might help???
What do you think about 46 x 16?
Literally hundreds...
foot retention whether it be straps or cages but whatever it is, must be considered essential. And if u have this many concerns I would say brakes are also a must and then as others have said practice. I mean really u shouldn't have to think about pedalling, I would be more concerned at being fully aware of what's happening in front of you. Thanks for the post, made me laugh a little, appreciate it. Have fun!
I will get cages then, and I am so glad I had brakes, I would have been screwed without them.

I just built myself a shiny new fixie and I just went out for my first, short ride.
I knew it would be different and that I would find it hard because that's what everyone says, but boy was that an understatement for me.So off I set, while going slowly I came to some traffic lights, I tried to coast and I felt a small kick - understandable.
So I tried going a bit faster, then naturally I tried to coast again.
I can't really describe what happened next, it felt inexplicable.
But to try and put it into words, it felt like my pedal lifted my leg and whole body, then pushed me over my handlebars and onto the floor, then my bike fell away.I usually ride geared, and I have pretty much no idea about what to do with a fixie. And I have some questions, I looked around for advice, but I couldn't really find much more than "its different".
Firstly, can I have some advice as to the mindset that I need to be in to make the transition? Do I just need to constantly think about not NOT pedaling, or take it in naturally like you do when learning to coast?
What changes can I make to help the transition become easier?
What about my bike? Does anything to do with my bike make anything easier?
What happened when you first went on a fixie? Anyone else flip like me?
I haven't even thought about skidding, the thought of me purposefully trying to stop pedaling fills me with fear. But how do you actually do it? From experience, I know that if I try and stop pedaling, the pedal lifts me up, is this right? Is this part of the skidding process? Do straps help with skidding?Any answers or advice you guys can give me will be a massive help, thank you in advance.

Hey guys,
I am looking for a secondhand or new pair of pedals that are not too expensive. I will be willing to pay up to £10 (exceptions if they are really nice).
It would be nice if they had toe clip and/or strap. But for £10, I can't be picky. Also it would be nice if they were local to where I live, SE London.
Thanks a lot.
Also if anyone is looking for a Dahon Groove semi folding bike, PM me or look for my ad. -
