Whoa, that might take it one way or the other. Are the shifters 2 x 8, or 3 x 8? And is the chainset an eight speed - I mean, it is clearly a triple, but what chain is it supposed to run with?
Its a 8spd triple set up. So the levers are 8 and 3 speed and its all made to run 8 speed chain. (I also have the derailleurs)

^^That. If you get a rep for picking the best pieces at certain price levels then people will come to you if they need something rather than shop around online as they know they will be getting a good deal!
Another thing I would say, is being flexible about what you offer. One of the main things I like about LBS' is going in having a chat with the guy and deciding on the best product. Then even if they don't have it in store, them being able to order it in for me! -

I think, as has been said friendly staff are so important! I will try to avoid shops I dont like the feel of.
Also I like an open workshop type thing (so you can see the mechanics working) obviously this depends on the building you are in. But its comforting to see a mechanic doing a nice job if your about to hand your bike over (room out the back for "hit it as hard as you can" problems) -
