Whoa, that might take it one way or the other. Are the shifters 2 x 8, or 3 x 8? And is the chainset an eight speed - I mean, it is clearly a triple, but what chain is it supposed to run with?

Its a 8spd triple set up. So the levers are 8 and 3 speed and its all made to run 8 speed chain. (I also have the derailleurs)

If you want at some point I have some (rather beat-up) 2300 shifters which could do with a new home! (I also have a black triple chainset)

^^That. If you get a rep for picking the best pieces at certain price levels then people will come to you if they need something rather than shop around online as they know they will be getting a good deal!
Another thing I would say, is being flexible about what you offer. One of the main things I like about LBS' is going in having a chat with the guy and deciding on the best product. Then even if they don't have it in store, them being able to order it in for me!

If your getting wheels built for CX go for tubs no question about it!

I think, as has been said friendly staff are so important! I will try to avoid shops I dont like the feel of.
Also I like an open workshop type thing (so you can see the mechanics working) obviously this depends on the building you are in. But its comforting to see a mechanic doing a nice job if your about to hand your bike over (room out the back for "hit it as hard as you can" problems)

I think there is no limit to how small the chainrings are, just the difference between the two chainrings. Because if you have tiny chainrings you can just shorten the chain. But with a large tooth gap a short cage rear derailleur would not be able to take up the slack.

I think if your fit enough to race you really wont need anything smaller than a 39 on the front. There is nothing in or around London that needs anything smaller than a 39-25. Especially on the crit circuits.

I see, I thought the rolling resistance of a good tubular tire was similar or better than that of a clincher untill you got to the wide rims, because they are rounder so deflect less, and can be ridden at higher psi.

Should have a forum building day. Hire out a workshop/warehouse. People bring tubes and entrance fee. Help one another build frames. Then ride to Paris!

I would think a better size would be something like a 650c wheel. Not as small as a 26 but will give you more clearance

Totally agree with this! If you have a lovely frame like that, then its just stupid to build it up "period correct" if you don't like it and wont actually want to ride it!

Yea two cross always looks better IMO. Sounds like a good gearing ratio for the road. I will be selling a break set at some point in the near future, I would be willing to sell just the front if you are interested!
