Ndeipi, I work with Practical Action also (not employed, alongside my research) I think we've missed that somewhere along the line, ha! Sounds like I should pay you a visit sometime - and if you've got a spare bike, go for a ride.
In my experience the motorbike-taxis are worse in Kampala - my first day visiting there and a guy took me on the pavement the wrong way up the street. Probably about 10% are drunk you are right and I never call the ones in rural areas anymore - too many bad experiences of dropping me in random places because "i'm not allowed to go up that street" - so I get the "official" ones waiting on street corners.
Did you get the package btw?

Wow, fellow hipster in Kenya! I currently live in Kisumu, although I am at home in UK at the moment (ran away due to the elections). Never thought about doing any serious riding out there to honest, roads are just not worth it and I am not willing to go out at night. I have a bike out there but its just a cheap Chinese thing I bought from Tusky's! Will be returning to Kenya on 14th April and passing through Nairobi. Need any parts bringing over?

Scared the hell out of someone last night at the junction at honor oak, no traffic at all, I was cycling past on my ssmtb and I see some teenager walk out in front of me from about 10-15m away as I pass him I do a little hop skid and as I'm riding knobblies it's loud as f when I skid, and ye he shits his pants and jumps in the air.
Mega lolz
What is the point of this? Are people meant to find this impressive?
To me this amounts to the same thing as a white van driver shouting something out of a window to a cyclist.
