Yep I think you’re right, hornet hoverfly—it was pretty big!

Is this big fly Tabanus sudeticus?

Those aren’t shutters, it’s a front garden fence: https://goo.gl/maps/iCUWi8b7GTWuSFJa6

I guess you haven’t tried searching for forum mentions of those tyres…
Re 23mm Marathon Pluses they’ll be fine on towpaths, except for the lumpy cobbly bits in the wet. Canals aren’t usually very deep at the edges, apart from by the locks.

Stewart Lee did a great bit about leaving London and living in the country

Very nice! I similarly got a Leach Marathon from a cellar—but given to my by the sole previous owner before he died. The paint was too far gone on mine; Argos did a good job on it, but yours looks like it just needs a wipe with an oily rag. Single speed by the look of it? Pics of mine before & after here: https://www.flickr.com/gp/rsstephenson/dox6Kj & if you haven’t already read it some notes from classic lightweights.

Me too. I’ve only known where to go once or twice, and never from the clue—just by happening to recognise the location or zoom/enhance to be able to search for it. This looks very much like someone’s front garden, and despite the modern trend for putting hard standing and a car on them there are still loads of them! I’m resisting asking for a hint, but it’s no good: please can I have a hint?

Reminds me of something

Next door’s garden a couple of weeks ago, very rarely used apart from by the resident foxes; I lifted a fence panel and buried this one where it had fallen. The smell alerted me, and I didn’t fancy a plague of flies. Poor old fox, even though they dig everything up etc I much prefer them alive than dead.

It’s a turret.

Looks a lot like a disgorger to me. [edit]: I can’t see the slot though. You could turn it into one?
