Thought It was about time I put up a current projects thread..
Before I get to that, I haven't actually introduced myself on the forums after a few years of lurking and some activity in the classifieds. I'm Jack, a uni student from souf london that has a passion for bikes, riding bikes and racing bikes.
I live locally to Herne Hill so I train and race down their regularly (I'm a VCL member), and for the last two seasons I've done quite a bit of road racing at Palace, Hillingdon and Hog Hill. I am by no means amazing but have a goal to get myself into the 3rd cat this season after just trying to finish races last season. Aside from that I also ride my bike to Epsom (art college) everyday (about a 24 mile round trip) so I get in quite a bit of time commuting as well.
So, about a year ago I got my hands on this now discontinued Kinesis KR510 frameset. I got it for quite a deal, but even for the original price it would've been quite a steal for the specs. Frameset weight is about 1.5kg which is very reasonable for the price. The tubing specs and geometry are suited for the type of riding I do mostly - closed road crits/maybe some Surrey League races this year and mid length road rides. Its not the best looking frame out there and tbh I think the spf tube shapes look a tad too funky but Its got nice carbon wishbone seat stays and a very good full carbon fork (380g).
Heres a few pics, showing some of little paint chips and scuffs that I will probably fill with some white nail varnish.

I rode it last season with a mix of 105 and Ultegra, Zipp bars, a Thomson Elite seatpost, Deda Zero stem and an old specialized saddle. I also had some shitty 'fake carbon' Ambrosio brake calipers and was using old Ultegra 9 spd levers with the rest of the 10spd group which I do not recommend, but at the end of the day I just rode what I could afford and the levers were some of my dads old ones. For this season though I wanted to spec it higher and spend a little more dosh.
I managed to get my hands on a Dura Ace chainset on ebay at a very good price - used but hardly.

Also got some ultegra levers, brake calipers and a 105 cassette which I'll be using in the interim.

Need to get my hands on a few details though > some sort of chain catcher, a new stem (probably thomson to match the post), new top cap and spacers and some ti bottle cages as well as some tiny details such as a brake cable adjuster bolt for the front brake and a new gear mech hanger.
Not sure if I will use the 105 rear mech I already have or buy a new 6700 Ultegra one and as for the front mech I've already got an ultegra one which needs a thorough clean before I can fit it.Wheelset will hopefully be H+son TB14 rims laced to Dura Ace hubs with Sapim cx rays and alloy nipples. Tyres will hopefully be Challenge Criteriums with the gumwall as it will compliment the hard anodised rims and the greys and whites of the bikes frame set and components. Saddle will be a Fizik Arione which I should be buying soon. Will try to update this thread as soon as some progress is made.

I've got a mavic aksium front wheel from a few years ago. Runs pretty true with a worn brake surface. Also got a v sprint silver track front wheel also with worn braking surface but completely true - radially laced, quando hubs. Both w/ rim tape but no inner tube or tyre. Would let em go for about a tenner.
edit. also got a halo aerorage rear with a spoke missing??

Hi,
I'm looking for a small (under 50 cm preferably) steel classic looking ladies town bike for my girlfriends birthday. It could be a Dutch style shopper or any similar kind of bike. Reasonable condition in working order and in London area is a must. Got to have it by the 19th of October. Oh and under £80 would be great. Thanks

It was riders dicking about that caused the crash, simple. Please don't make excuses for bad riding and certainly do not blame the organisers.
I don't agree. I am A/B rider down at track league most weeks and I was within the front 6-7 riders in the race as I did not qualify for derny races. The crash happened way behind me - about 10 riders back and the first man to go down was a chap who I had previously earmarked as a rider out of his depth at the Monday advanced sessions I had first seen him in. He is a rider who was bound to cause crashes and he had little-no experience racing. Him causing the crash was simply his lack of race experience and skittishness.
The guy who went down first was identified as being the cause of the crash by other people who were involved in the aftermath including a friend of man who was on the wheel of the guy and had his skin-suit wrecked and bad roadrash. He and others told me that the rider in question had failed to react to a slow in pace of the bunch quick enough and having initially tried to go under the wheel of the rider in front realised he was still going too fast. He then tried to change lines and go above the rider he'd previously gone under hitting his wheel and going down. I talked to rider who's wheel he hit and he can vouch for this also.
The only issue here is that there has been an influx of people with little experience riding and racing in bunch situations at speed. People do a couple Saturday sessions and think they're racers....
My point is that nobody was dicking about and the race wasn't even at race-pace yet. There were about 4-5 laps to go. I don't believe however that Cs should be mixed with As and Bs though. Some of these kids were spinning out within the 1st lap....
EDIT: 'From my vantage point I could see riders swing off the front in the most exaggerated fashion through the first few laps'
I cannot see how this has any relevance? The crash was not caused by this at all.
Anyway, as long as the rider is swinging up from the front and not within the middle of the pack this is standard race technique. If a rider cannot handle another rider swinging up and coming down immediately to fight to get on the wheel of a rider in a strung out line at race pace then he or she should re-consider racing. It happens all the time in A B and C races and never cause crashes. Pretty much every crash I've seen on the track this season in these cats has been to do with nervousness within the bunch (usually at quite a slow pace).

I ordered a Dolan Pre Cursa complete bike about 25 days ago now. Originally I ordered it in 54cm and waited for a few days. My order didn't arrive. I eventually emailed them and asked what was happening and they explained that it was out of stock. This is second time this has happened with them, as a few months ago I tried to order an Izumi half link track chain and it was the same situation. Anyway they told me the next 54m frame would be in stock on the 21st may (bearing in mind this is the start of april at the time). I obviously didn't want to wait so long and because it was the only site that had the bike at the price point, I just changed the frame size to 56cm. They told me It'd with me in five working days. Again, I waited and waited and waited. Eventually I emailed them again as to why my bike hadn't arrived and they replied vaguely by saying that the bike had the 'wrong specification' and that THEIR mechanics were working on correct it. They also told me that'd it be with me within two days (which was never going to happen anyway). So again I waited. Five days later I email them again asking where my order was. They replied telling me that apparently they've sent it back to Dolan to change to specification and that would take up to 10 DAYS for them to correct it! And thats not even 10 days to get me. Thats 10 days at Dolan. I'd have to wait however many days for them to ship it to Velodrome shop and then more days for them to ship it to me.
Anyway I'll be calling Dolan tomorrow to ask them about this whole debacle and I'll probably cancel the order and demand a refund + compensation and then just order it direct from Dolan. So a month on from my original order and I'm still sitting here without a track bike.
What an absolute bunch of fucking cunts.
I will never ever order from these amatures again.

@Philpub - Thanks again for the heads up on bottle cages. PM sent about the tyres.
@sirbikealot - Yeah that's a good point however I don't really intend to race a lot on these wheels. I have limited cash so the idea was to get a nice pair of hand built wheels for the club runs and spring/autumn rides and then next season to invest in some sort of semi deep carbon race wheels.
Your comment did make me realise that I'd probably be better to go for some cheaper heavier built hubs like Ambrosio Zeniths. As to the Spoke/nipple type, I'll decide when the time comes to build them up as It will depend largely on how much money I have at the time.
Also I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on a little aesthetic problem I've run into. A little while back I was doing some night time training and had lost my rear light's bracket before I left the house. In a rush I just wrapped the rear light in electrical tape as a botch job. In retrospect It wasn't the best idea because now my seat post is covered in weird white patches on the post where dirt has stuck to the sticky surface left by the removal of the tape.
It doesn't help that the surface of the Thomson post is ever so slightly ridged (for lack of better word). Any idea on how I might remove this? I tried white spirit on a rag and when that didn't work I tried getting off with some white spirit on an old tooth brush. Any better suggestions?
