They're sort of slightly squidgy foam, I reckon you're right that that's what they're for - such a tight fit to stop them sliding around maybe. They would look mega ugly though, I think I might just put a bit of tape on the head tube or something (if I do anything at all), and not use the fat foam tubes. Thanks

Sadly the NTA (National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse) is being dismantled.
Supposedly its functions will be integrated into the new PHE (Public Health England), but its funding has not been ring-fenced.

is my current combo, and it's working out brilliantly so far, and about as cheap as it gets.

Cycled to Brighton with a mate yesterday. Bloody hell it was cold, but zero rain, which was nice and shows the benefit of ignoring forecasts, which predicted solid rain all day. Surrey and Sussex are looking lovely in a quiet, damp and thoroughly autumnal way.
Live animals spotted: about 100 horses, lots of cows, lots of sheep, lots of dogs, 1 fox,1 bunny, 3 pheasants, lots of seagulls.
Dead animals spotted: 1 badger, 2 pigeons, 1 stoat/weasel :-(
Punctures: 2, one immediately after the other, and my first ones in about a year :-(
Navigational errors: 0
Pubs visited: 4
Fish and chips eaten: 1 large
All in all it was a thoroughly excellent day out, and the hills didn't seem as hard or as steep or as long as last time, which is a good sign.
Route (thoroughly recommended):
