^Where exactly in NZ are you planning on going? Unless you're very rural I'd definitely go for the touring frame with CX tyres. A older steel touring frame built for 27" wheels would have plenty of clearance for 700c with 35's + mudguards and would only require some new braze-ones for canti's etc. This would either work well or fail badly...

Anyone recommend a B&B (and good veggie restaurant) in Brighton not too far from the train station for a surprise weekend away for me and the wife?
I'm an unapologetic omnivore, but this was excellent when I went here. Pretty reasonable as well, and only a mile from the station.

what sites do peeps use (and recommend) for buying flights to europe? I'm looking on opodo at the moment, and direct to a couple of airlines' sites. anything else?
Kayak and Skyscanner are the best. Skyscanner is good if you're flexible with travel plans, or just have some time off and don't know where to go. For example, you can search 'Any London airport' to 'Everywhere' and it will list destinations by price. I ended up in Eindhoven one weekend for £16 return using this.

1,000 welcomes to the sale of my beloved backpack.
I'm hoping that this may be of interest to someone on here. I used this to travel from NZ through the US, Canada and parts of Europe and it is more then adequate for the task. It's in excellent nick, and is the slightly older version of this (minus the Gluon). It has the same harness system etc.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26536817/Pack/2012-10-15%2022.22.16.jpgSadly, however, my days of meandering the world are swiftly coming to an end and I'm heading back home to settle down, get married, have kids, get fat and die, miserable and lonely in an old folks home after my shouts for help have gone unnoticed. All I wanted was the grand kids to visit, and for someone to change my soiled Depends™. All I wanted was some dignity, god damn it. Dignity.

As winter is on the way, the theory was that now would be a great time to build a practical winter commuter. In practice, I've done the opposite.
I have been using this parts bin special as my daily beater for the last 8 months or so. A Surosa track frame, which was matt black powder coated before I got it

When I saw this for sale on here with a cracked head tube (quite common with Forts).

I had Vernon Barker fix it for me for a measly £30, then as the paint was fucked after the welding, and the fact I hate metallic blue bikes, I gave it a Home Made Ghetto Fade, then built it up tonight into this (sorry about the shit pics)

No new parts, but I sprayed the rear rim black as well. The brake and pedals are now on, but they're the same as the ride at the top. I'm really not keen on the cockpit, but it'll do for a bit until I dial in what I want. It should be a bit of fun, and it'll be heading back to NZ with me in December anyway, so some summer riding is on the cards soon.

Dunedin's a great place. Huge amounts of fun to be had there if you like the outdoors and surfing in very cold water. I don't know much about the riding around there, except that the Rail Trail is quite easy going. I assume you've seen this? Most of which are really straight forward. I reckon you'll be spot on with the tourer, and if you want to get into any dirty stuff when you're there you can always trawl the NZ version of ebay for a cheap MTB - Trademe. Good luck,
