I do some voluntary work for a local cycle charity. We’ve got some projects in mind that we’ll need some welding done on. We’re thinking about buying a TIG welder as that will help us with this work and also would be handy to have at the workshop for future bike stuff.
I was thinking that a fairly entry level TIG welder with a foot pedal is what we need.
Can anyone advise what’s a good starter option? Being a charity there’s not a huge amount of cash around but we want something that’s not complete rubbish.

Or the other option is going the gas brazing route which would be mor bike specific and then would it be possible to use it for some general, non-bike fabrication in steel plate?

How are you welding those racks? Is it TIG?

I wonder if the way the lug was designed speeds up all the jointing on that part of the frame for batch production. Clever if it does.

I think that a bike fitter is interested in the contact points. And how you hold a ridable position on the bike for the length of time your rides are.

The frame builder will work with these contact points and use frame geometry to get the ride feel you’re after.

By the way, are you and Ed related? Your photos show a resemblance.

The light wouldn’t be in the way if the brake bosses were on the inside of the seat stay as in the photo you posted.
But I doubt it bothers Ed enough for all of those changes now.

I’ve got this to sell. A bit random for this forum but I thought I’d give it a go before eBay.
It’s in mint condition (but the photo I’ve used is just from the manufacturers website as I’m lazy, I’ll take a proper photo later)
It’s basically a real time effects unit that you can run decks or synths or whatever through (there’s a phono in or a line in).

Thanks for your advice, it’s a big help.
For brazing a rack would you use bronze or silver?
I’m particularly keen to make myself a custom rack for an existing bike. Also it seems like a good practice project.
