Do I just go for cheapest spherical or would I appreciate an elliptic?
Quite often you can upgrade a conical stylus to elliptical, so you could start with the cheaper conical then when it's time to replace the stylus upgrade then if you feel it's worth it.
The Ortofon red is commonly upgraded to the blue, same with the Goldring E3, there are even upgrades to the AT 3600. Also if your just looking for something to play your records the AT3600 isn't bad, and it's pretty much the cheapest cartridge.

He's alright. I quite admire his ability to talk for so long about one thing.
If you're streaming music maybe look for a receiver that does streaming. It wasn't a feature I ever thought I'd use as I've been like "I'll just buy the music", but actually it's probably the feature I use the most along (after getting tidal) with the optical in for the TV. Bluetooth sounds a bit dead to me TBH and I'll only use it as a last resort. I get you on the cables, I went from a NAD with an airport express, Bluetooth receiver, phono stage, optical dac to having it all built in in this Onkyo. It's freed up a lot plug sockets if nothing else.
If you're struggling for space some older Japanese hifi components are half the depth of what I'd consider to be normal these days.

Fairly standard Telegraph, until you realise why the dog's name isn't on his own grave, and has been omitted from the article.

I've got the Dali's, for the reason that they're designed to work close up to the wall and that they're small enough to put in a bookshelf. Not ideal I know but I've gotta work with the space I've got.
The place before had a large rectangular living room, and I had some floor standing Q Acoustics. Was much better acoustically.
Just about to move again but I've no idea where I'm gonna put the hi-fi, and I wanted to get some different speakers (possibly Elac Unifi) but the options there are terrible, and I'd rather not have to resort to head phones.

Currently got 5 cubs that are using our garden as a play ground, they're super cute. I haven't seen the mother though.
I'm not sure what my house cat thinks to them as he chased one this evening but wasn't all puffed up or growling so maybe he just wanted to play.
