Two things happened at MM and I think one may be the cause of this knee pain.
1 - I changed the SPD pedals on my MTB bike. Same brand and model as before and as those on my SS, but for some reason they seem to have a lot less float.
2 - I crashed at Mountain Mayhem many times (it was very muddy) and one of the crashes twisted my knee quite badly.
did you change your shoes? the pedals need to have a bit of float but the shoes are more important. make sure the cleat is attached at the same angle that your foot naturally hangs at if you were to dangle your legs off a table.
but it actually sounds a lot like you could benefit from a shim in the right shoe to angle your foot. a lot of knee pain caused by cleats is down to stretching ligaments as the lower leg rotates through the pedal. the cleat prevents the foot from rotating, causing small unnatural stretching through the knee. you only feel it after a couple of hours riding, by which time the damage is done. i find specialised soles are great and come with a pack of shims - orange to raise the inside of the foot, yellow for the outside for weirdos like my left leg, which rotates inwards on the downstroke. i have mavic shoes and the original soles were rubbish, nearly ruined me.
otherwise, it's probably that you damaged ligaments in the crash. best to see a doctor or physio.

I'll post a picture tonight, am in work at the minute
yeah I normally ride the hoods with a freewheel, so I only use the drops when there's no immediate prospect of needing to brake.
sounds like I've just got them set a bit too high on the bars then? they're sitting so the flat of the hood is just level with the top of the bars. I will try moving them forward, that should change the angle enough.
-
I have a genesis flyer with the stock drop bars and Shimano BL-R400 brake levers. I can barely reach the levers with my hands in the drops, which is not good. these particular levers aren't adjustable, so I either need to replace them with adjustable reach levers, or find new drop bars with a more suitable reach.
I'd prefer to find new bars, but I have no idea what make or model of bar to look for to meet this requirement. so far looking at online shops, I can't see any measurements listed that say how far forward they reach. any suggestions would be appreciated.
-
when measuring bib shorts, length is far more important than waist size because they don't have any waistband, or indeed any sort of measurable waist as they stretch open as they move upwards and are ultimately held up by the shoulders (that's sort of the point).
so if you get a pair that are too short they'll be sliding up your leg and compressing your thigh too high (uncomfortable). get it too long and they'll be sitting on your knee joint. if the length's right, dibs them.
