I am doing the Dublin triathlon this weekend. The swim is in the River Liffey, 750m upstream, then turn and swim 750m downstream. Should I assume that this would make the swim the same time as swimming in a lake? ie. swimming upstream will be slower than normal and swimming downstream will be faster?

anybody else noticed that Royal Mail van drivers are a little over-eager on the accelerator and over-taking recently (even when, reading-the-road-ahead, there is a visible red light)?
recall counting three instances of surprise..
Sounds about right. Last time I tried to claim from them I failed. They (used to, not to sure about now) 'self insure' ie. do not pay for insurance but hope that they have enough money in the bank to pay for accidents. It is thus in their interests to not pay anything out, as this is taking money away from their profits / making ther losses not so bad.....

Oi, fullkit wanker. Yes you with your Rapha-a-like musette. If you keep ringing your bell at me I'm going to shove it so far up your arse people with think you're having lightbulb moments every 5 minutes. I don't care that you chased me down for the past 4 miles after I passed you when you almost came to a standstill on a mild gradient, there isn't a gap there for you to squeeze through. Oh and don't go onto the pavement at full chat dingling you bell to skip through a set of traffic lights. If you're gonna blow through them grow some balls and do it properly man.
Fuck off at let me commute at my own pace in peace.
Where was the 'mild gradient'? If this was the Col de Holland Park then I have met this guy, he very nearly took out a few peds when jumping red lights earlier this week, when I passed him and told him he should not do this he got aggressive, although when I said that I would rise to his challenge and fight him but thought he would not do very well as he looked 'a bit weak' he declined my offer......

It's not clear exactly who collided with who.
Very well said twitch...
For anyone who would like to take this further: http://www.standard.co.uk/service/complaint-form-8539291.html Also: pcc.org.uk
My sincere condolences to the young lady's family and friends.
Thanks Titivulus, I will be contacting tha Standard and the PCC tommorow. I thought that journalism was dealing with facts rather than just random opinion.

It's not clear exactly who collided with who.
From the Standard: A police community safety officer at the scene claimed the hire bike was thought to have been laden with shopping - which may have caused her to lurch into something and be thrown into the path of the lorry.
If it was simply thought but not known then why mention this. Could have easily said 'the weather was hot and it is thought that the driver may have been looking at ladies passing by in their summer clothes, which may have caused the driver to become distracted and drive into the cyclist'.
We don't know if this happened, so would not mention it....
Shocking reporting, by the police and Standard.R.I.P. Rider, and may God give your friends and family strength to get through this.

What is a better wheel option for my everyday road bike?
Either some shimano r500's from ribble for £65 new OR
something like open pro's (or similar traditional quality aftermarket rims) to built onto some sort of branded hub, like 105's - 32spoke. But in a varied state of used-ness and priced something between £80-£100 accordingly
Shimano r500 for 65 quids is fantastic. They are not too heavy, very strong and hubs are good. I have an r500 front wheel on one of my bikes, done about 6000 miles, never serviced, still smooth and true. If you can get open pros on 105 (or an equivalent) in a relatively unused state for 100 quids then go for it, but unless I knew who was selling them and how much use they had (ie. not much) I would go for r500s

They have a sale on at the moment too (the branch at chancery lane do anyway) and are knocking out suits at £179.
I quite like tm Lewin suits for my dreary office attire..
They do a mix of slimmer and fatter styles...
If you can stretch to it buy two pairs of trousers with 1 suit jacket, best advice I've ever been given regarding suits, as it makes them last twice as long..
Kool, thanks.
-
Hi All,
I need to buy a new suit, due to possibly being made redundant - have got interview with HR next week and possibly other interviews with prospective employers too. I need a new suit, will need to be quite conservative (I work in the dreary world of office management) and I have not got big bucks to spend.
Where is the best place to go for a 2 piece suit for 200-300 pounds? Marks and Spencer? Moss Bros? John Lewis?
BTW I am 40 (so not looking for a really trendy suit) and not really slim, but not huge either. 38 inch chest and 32 inch waist.

No brakes so that everyone on level playing field & we don't get bunched crashes due to over braking. Make sense? Do you guys think that we need to stipulate drops? Ant
Why drops? I might go to this but will have to ride down with my son. I will need to use my old Paddy Wagon as I can put a rack on this and I can remove the brake easily when I get there, but this has straight bars.
Brakeless - YES
Compulsory type of bars - NO -
Sorry, cross post from swimming thread:
Wetsuit advice please.
My wetsuit got nicked at Helvellyn tri last year and I need to get another (quite urgently as the Henley Classic is on the 30th June). Where can I view and try on a decent range of wetsuits? I have a slight preference for HUUB or BlueSeventy but I'm not umbilically tied to either brand.
Preferably as close to Oxford as possible but if I need to travel a bit to avoid having to swim in a shit wetsuit then I will.
What size do you need? I have a medium-tall Orca S2 that you could borrow - I am 5 foot 10, 32 inch waist and 38 inch chest, fits me fine, I have cut down the arms and legs by about 2 inches though. I live in Staines, if you want to borrow then you can pick it up evenings. Has had a LOT of use, there are lots of small tears / holes that have been filled. I will need it back the week after though.

Which grease for bearings?
Shimano dura ace, Finish Line ceramic grease or Finish line teflon grease
I would go for the one that is easiest to remove from a carpet, unfortunately the descriptions and reviews do not mention this, even though this is the most important property of grease for a 'home mechanic'.,

Just take it into a paint shop? They have those nifty machines where they can mix up any colour for you.
Thanks. Did that, went to Leyland SDM on Googe Street. They have a scanner that gives the nearest matching paint. Will be painting a wall in this colour on Saturday, hopefully it will look OK for the client.
-
I need to buy some paint for a client so that they have a wall in their office that matches their corporate colour. They have given me a pantone colour, 2995 C, does anyone know what paint colour may match. I cannot find a matching RAL colour, the nearest is RAL 5012, but the client doesn't think this is close enough.
Google is not really helping me with this.
Many thanks in advance.

I like the idea of hurling my shitty commuter bike through his windscreen.
I did this last year, BMW driver knocked me off my bike in a bus lane, got out and punched me, got back in and drove at me - I threw my bike at his car hopine he would swerve out of the way, but he didn't. My bike bounced off his car and then he still drove at me, ran over my foot and broke my toes...
He got 8 months in prison though. And my bike wasn't damaged. Win all round, except for my toes!!!

Fuck. This. Shit.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-22397918
Da fuk. This has made me cry.
'Sheriff James Scott spared McCourt a prison because there were no aggravating factors, such as drink or drug abuse.'
So I could kill someone with a gun or knife and as long as I was not drunk or on drugs I would just have to clean a bit of grafitti off some walls.
And:
'The sheriff said Mrs Fyffe "wasn't to blame in any way for the accident", but added: "She was not wearing a safety helmet and that in my view contributed to her death."'
I think that there was a something else that contributed a lot more to her death.
Also:
'A spokesman for the Crown Office said it would "give careful consideration as to whether the sentence was unduly lenient".'
Can the sentence be reviewed and, if it is too lenient, be made harsher? ie. a custodial sentence.
Driver and Sheriff are cunts.
RIP Audrey, and deepest sympathies to Ian.

I didnt mean any of what I said to be a character assasination of anyone.
If anything I said seems harsh it's because Ive got little patience left for people who present entirely anecdotal or misleading stories as justification for a certain train for thought.
The 2 original paragraphs state that in one case death was averted but mentions nothing of the treatment, which was likely the sole reason for survival, while also inferring that it was down to praying alone. If so, why on earth wouldn't this mystical healing have prevented paralysis?
The 2nd one I actually find pretty offensive considering Ive just been through 6 rounds of chemotherapy over 3 months. Ive felt and experienced every stage of what the poisons and drugs have done to me to save me day by day hour by hour, and I can tell you now it's nothing mystical or supernatural. That her friends and relatives prayed for her is entirely irrelevant to the story - she's undoubtedly alive now because she was regularly pumped full of cytotoxic drugs or had surgery.
Well documented proven cases of healing by prayer: Find just one.
Survivors of illness through modern medicine: Almost countless.Rowhan, I really hope you do recover. I truly wish you well.
Paragraph 2 of my post: I do not know what treatment was given.
Paragraph 1 of my post: no treatment, in fact the consultant basically 'pulled the plug' from the venitlator and let nature take its course. My dad isparalysed from the wais down, so apparently is described as having ' limited movement'. Have to be PC about these things.
-
I was wondering if other forum people believed in miracles or the power of prayer / meditation / positive thoughts.
This time last year my dad was given 2 days to live, I only told a few people about this, but they all said prayers / meditated / sent positive thoughts for him. My dad is still alive, although has restrictive mobility (ie. paralyzed from the waist down). But the good news is that he is still alive...This time last month I got to work and received a text from my receptionist. She could not come to work as her mum was in hospital being treated for stomach cancer. She had only a few days to live. I said prayers for her, and people at her Temple (She is Hindu) prayed and meditated for her. She is now at home this evening cooking dinner for her family and friends (as confirmed by text and emails…)
So if you believe that prayer and positive thoughts can make a difference to peoples lives, please post it here.

Hi All,
Whilst stopped at a red light at Notting Hill Gate (Westbound) I noticed a bunch of keys on the road. I picked them up and asked other cyclists if they had lost their keys, nobody had.
I am thinking that theys keys might have fallen out of a cyclists pocket, as I was stopped in the ASL box.
If these are yours, please let me know.
I am not on any other cycling forums, so if someone wanted to post a link on bike radar and the like please let me know.
I will hand these into the police in the morning if not claimed, as am unable to get to a police station now.

"Accepted" seemed like it's an option rather than a necessity.
It probably was an option, the other option being taken to magistrates court and if found guilty get fined and points on her licence. The fine probably would have cost less than the course, but there were no court costs.
I had a minor collision a couple of yeard ago and the police told me that the driver was given these 2 options and chose the driver awareness course. I am glad he chose the course as hopefully he would have learned something.
