I have a pretty much brand new 1st gen black edition Brompton.
Currently spec'd with carbon post and bars I have the originals too which will be included in the sale.
The rear reflector mount has a rear light mod so you have a permanently fixed light.
I can also include in the sale a extended silver seatpost but I do not have the original saddle.
very clean & low mileage

I think there's a decline in casual cyclists buying bicycles.
There was a boom period with the introduction of cyclescheme et al and over the olympics but a large majority of people are content with one bike and will see no need to upgrade until they have run their current steed into the ground.
I'm sure some people have moved towards the boutique or customised market but not enough to account for the down turn in bike sales.
I also think that local bike shops will have an uptake in trade as consumers become cleverer and realise the bicycle community that surrounds them not just the "name brand" large retailers.
I would imagine over the next few years the sales of bikes would remain relatively constant with the large retailers wethering the storm while some small to mid size businesses especially those without a large enough customer base or those currently expanding may not be so lucky.

Is it better to stay well within that or will 54/38 function as well as anything else?
