The camera doesn't really matter unless you have printing requirements, and I don't think you do. And all good compacts have very similar specs, so it's not like one lens can produce a type of image another can't. If you decide you need some special use lens to make the images you want it's going on an SLR either way. You'll probably learn more on digital.
Except, it does matter to how you feel, and how inspired you are when you shoot.
With that in mind I think option 2 is best for you. It expands your options, and you can spend more $$$ when you know what pictures you really want to make. But if you go out with some other camera and regret not taking option 1, you should take it. You can always sell a 35Ti. (BTW, I don't think a 35Ti is a super small easy and causal carry.)

Really like this one Will.

@mrboulard I wouldn't mind a 35mm elmar for the size but $$$. Anyway I will probably shoot a 28mm mostly (I have one but no finder atm) and there isn't one that old (and I wouldn't want to shoot the oldest ones anyway).
Actually I made a thread mount 35mm from the lens from a nikon l35 af and some broken stuff but I can't be bothered to calibrate the focus.

Thanks. It's great, I love it. Most people prefer some way of focusing properly and/or metering I guess but this really suits how I shoot. Nothing to get in the way and easy to do it "wrong"when I want to.
It's also frankly just a lovely thing as an object. The seller mentioned it hasn't been serviced and might be a bit rough but it's more than smooth enough, especially for a camera nearly 90 years old. -

Voting for Will despite my misgiving that surely this can't be good for the squirrel
