Business rates are killing the retail sector slowly and are decimated the once thriving high-street.
Stores that were marginally profitable are now running a steady loss even more so when you factor in the uncertainty around Brexit and economic slowdown, Llw and rents, etc.
Unless we all make a conscious decision to move away from Online and support existing brick and mortar businesses it is only going to get tougher (just look at BHS, HoF, Maplins, etc etc.).
Who is going to service our bikes when the big chains are all out-of-town outlets and LBSs have gone the way of the dodo?I used Evans Chalk Farm in the past. They were okay but nothing to shout about.
The most frustrating thing about going into Evans/big chain store wanting to "buy a new bike" (e.g.) is that pretty much always you get redirected to their damn website. -

Hi, I've been living in the Croydon area for 8 years now.
Both Purley and Coulsdon I'd consider as nice areas, safe, and family friendly.
As a rule the further away you go from Croydon the better/nicer/pricier it gets. I'm sure you got that already.
Addiscombe is okay definitely feels a lot more "inner city " but it's only a bus or bike ride to East Croydon. There are some nice residential streets around.
From Purley or Coulsdon the train is probably your most reliable option.
East Croydon is super convenient as it's so well connected. Shame it hasn't got the best rep. Things are changing with Boxpark, maybe a Westfield shopping centre in years to come... -

Still available.
Will favour a 150/155mm saddle in top condition ideally.
