It is possible that the police believe that a helmet could have prevented death so a charge of "causing death by dangerous driving" might not be appropriate. If they think that they should let the judge and jury examine the evidence and make a decision. It does not explain why there was no prosecution for careless driving.
lcc.org.uk/articles/dead-cyclists-family-let-down-at-every-stage-by-met-policeThis fact makes me want to weep.

There are loads of interesting recommendations posted in this thread, most of which I miss.
So, I'd be interested to see some basic stats for the forum's coffee drinking habits and preferences - ie, a chart showing our favourite roasters, blends, brew techniques, budget or blow-out buys, surprising supermarket finds etc.
I guess that would require a poll though and does anyone do polls unless there's some reward to be gained? Hmm, perhaps a list would be better...

I dislike watching magic on TV and things like Derren brown so haven't really been tainted by it. I tend to keep an open mind until I've experienced something first hand anyway.
You'd better stay away from this new show then (and not just because Phillip Schofield is hosting it): http://metro.co.uk/2014/03/30/look-into-my-eyes-phillip-schofield-set-to-host-game-show-youre-back-in-the-room-where-contestants-are-hypnotised-4683128/

3 month x-ray and physio tomorrow.
I still get twinges if I do too much walking or standing, and my thigh itches like crazy if I do heavier exercise, or walk up a hill, but overall, my hip situation seems to have improved hugely. I've been doing plenty of stretching but not nearly enough of my buttock building exercises. I'm crap at doing anything that requires me to repeat and count but not go anywhere (like being in a gym). Hopefully it'll all seem good enough that I can see how a bike feels.

How scary @Kat_Balou - glad you can at least now treat or manage the diagnosis - better than not knowing what the hell is wrong.
Do they know why you've developed asthma? Did they do anything other than an x-ray, such as a spirometer test?
I don't want to go all Daily Fail on you but there's a lot of misdiagnosis of the condition and very inconsistent care. If I were you, I'd get a second opinion from a specialist team. My dad was treated for asthma for years before they worked out what was really wrong, by which time it was too late to treat him effectively and the asthma treatment had done a lot of harm, even though it felt like it was helping.

If they do insist you wear tights (I've been wearing one particularly fetching "NHS beige" knee length stocking for a year now), a few suggestions:
Make sure you get them to write you a prescription for a LOT of them - they're not designed for people that move more than from the living room to the kitchen and get holes really quickly. Annoyingly you have to pay full prescription for each pair as well
When putting on after a shower, be prepared to spend 25 minutes hopping/swearing while you try to get them on any further than your ankle
It helps to already be in a relationship. I can imagine what a mood killer it might be to include this in the first night's passionate undress
Moisturise
Moisturise
Moisturise
A whole year?! I was so happy to be able to ditch those bastard stockings after a few weeks.
Trying to get my colossal swollen tree trunks in to and out of a pair was no fun, especially when one 'trunk' was broken.

I'm getting really fricking bored with my Gaggia's propensity to fail - even more so with the customer service team one has to deal with at Philips when things go wrong. It's been one thing after another since I got a Classic 2 years ago and all down to shit plastic components or actual mechanical failures.
Now the bloody steamer knob's come off :(

What an enigma she was! I think it's hard for people to comprehend how someone could refuse charity for 30 years, perhaps all the more when we are led to believe so many people abuse the benefits and social housing services.
People described her as dignified and I thought of her when reading about the photo of a Vogue-reading homeless woman, posted on Instagram by an heiress fashion editor this week:

Cue a maelstrom of social media reaction...

Hey @hoefla, no need to apologise! I like to think this thread isn't exclusive or closed to anyone.
Anyway, your input on things, All The Things, is always interesting and welcome. :)

Reps to the anonymous donator. There are indeed some wonderful people on this forum.
In case new people weren't aware, there is a 'Locks that work' thread: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/144109/
Used to be regularly updated. Perhaps no longer.

Is it bad that I really dislike articles like this?
'Green is the new black: how veganism became sexy in London' - http://www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle/foodanddrink/green-is-the-new-black-how-veganism-became-sexy-in-london-10083206.html
I know I should be pleased more people are apparently going vegan (or at least eating vegan) and that the market for cruelty free food has really taken off now, but I don't want it to be a sexy thing, thanks all the same.
Perhaps it doesn't matter why people choose to go vegan, and I'm sure we all do it (and are entitled to) for various personal reasons, but when I see articles like this, flippantly suggesting that it's all about being 'fit and fashionable', I wonder if the cruelty-free message is being lost a bit.
Maybe I'm just peeved that I've spent nearly all my teens and adult life not following trends (starting with cycling), and actually having to justify or defend my food choices (particularly to those who see it as an act of vanity/fussiness/an eating disorder/part of my eating disorder), and now it's the 'in thing' I fear that judgement is going to be even worse.
Also, finally - I hate the condescending stereotyping comments this writer makes: "The mung bean munchers have finally found their mojo" - ffs!
At least she does address the trend/health reasons vs animal welfare/sustainability issues towards the end of her piece, so perhaps I'm being a bit sensitive. ;-)

Help wanted for non-vegan (sorry) please...
Mrs c00ps is in town today and has surprised me with a lunch-date. Please has anyone a recommendation for a nice vegan-friendly eatery in the High St Ken (or maybe wider) area? Not mega expensive and no booking required would be a definite plus!
Thanks all.
Hi c00ps - sorry, this is no good to you now but for future reference, imho it's hard to go wrong with Kensington Wholefoods, in terms of pleasing different diets, being fast, open throughout the day, no booking and relatively inexpensive.*
*Compared with a sit-down restaurant or unless you get carried away in the self-service food bars (I always forget how weighty adding loads of sauces is).

The nhs expect to see results, how can you get results from something you can't see?
...and therein lies the challenge faced by almost every 'alternative' therapy or treatment technique, especially for psychological issues. I have seen attitudes change though, especially over the past 5 or so years, even if the funding hasn't always followed suit. It's great to see mindfulness, acupuncture, and elements of the 12 Steps being adopted by hospitals, for example.

I'm so glad hypnotherapy is helping you Oz - you've obviously gone to it with an open mind and given it your best shot, despite the (ahem) cynics like me!
I think a lot of people are put off by the term, perhaps assuming it's going to be like TV magician style hypnosis, devised to entertain and ridicule.
I hadn't realised this was offered by the NHS until you mentioned it, mainly for anxiety.
I hope it continues to help you :) xx
Well that's no bloody use to me, is it?! ;)
