I used to go out with a girl who had a proper pathological fear of spiders. If she saw one she would often vomit and then pass out, no exaggeration. It was like they invoked the fear of death itself. However she loved all other wildlife and had always dreamed about visiting the rainforest knowing that she never could go because of the propensity of eight legged monsters.

I booked her a surprise holiday to Venezuela staying on Coche island in the south of the Caribbean and arranged for a friend of mine who is a jungle guide who I met in Brazil to summon a posse of 12 men to scan the jungle for overtly obvious spiders and plot a path to avoid any that would be across our intended route. The plan was to get a boat to Margerita and then a small plane to mainland Venezuela where we'd do a five mile or so walk through the jungle to the angel falls hopefully avoiding any freak outs so that she could realise her dream.

Bitch dumped me two months before we were due to set off and to this day doesn't know what the plan was.

I can laugh about it now.

Actually, the most commonly promoted spelling is 'misspelt'. While I'm generally in favour of keeping the strong ending, here I don't like the resemblance to the grain spelt.

I mainly hyphenate because of the successive 's's, although I also like the little joke in that.

It's low-key, a really good price at Fatbirds (£60 down to £40) and all the reviews I read were positive.

This is to remind you that the Midsummer Madness solstice ride from Greenwich to Primrose Hill via Southwark Needle takes place in the wee hours of Friday morning. See the press release above for details.

I recce'd the ride this evening, and there was no problem with the route. During the recce I stopped by Bar Italia, and had a chat with the guvnor. He's looking forward to seeing us at 03:00 on Friday morning.

Declaration of interest: the café guvnor presented me with a funky Bar Italia cycling cap, and asked me to wear it on the day. Fair enough. The caps, which sell for something like £12, are black with a pink peak, and the Italian green, white and red tricolour stripe running front to back. See? It's not only our dear Miss Mouse who has the cheek to hawk trendy cycle clothing in London's online cycling forums. :-)

Saoirse is helping lead the Midsummer Madness ride, and on the night/morning will be back-marker. We need more marshals, so please volunteer! So far we have Miss Mouse (maybe) and three others (definite). That's too few to lead a ride with >100 participants. For those who agree to help I can supply a GPX file of the route.
