apologies everyone for this incredibly slow update
I did pick this up from croydon back in feb and tried to ride it back to bristol. after an hour or 2 fitting a rack, tyres and mudguards in a halfords carpark i was already running a little behind schedule...

I can confirm that national cycle route 4 is basically a rutted, muddy canal path that meanders ENDLESSLY along the thames before splitting off at Reading on to the Kennet Avon canal. It is very beautiful but very slow going. I spent a chilly/wonderful night (must buy a better sleeping bag) wild camping in windsor great park before getting as far as Newbury and catching a train to Bath and finishing the last 15miles to Bristol.
Since then I've fitted tubus front and rear racks (i cycled it home with a very cheap ally rack) and alpkit bars, rose stem, and deore xt v-brakes. the tyres are continental travel contacts 26x1.75. they roll very nicely on tarmac but i kind of wish they were a bit fatter. the fork has the most enormous clearance i've ever seen so it would be good to use some of it up with more rubber. Theres even ample clearance for a 700x35c tyre which makes me think it might actually be a 700c fork? but then the canti studs would be in the wrong place... hmm.

I've cycled it in this setup for a very weeks round town and some longer 30mile runs. seems comfortable and not too slow.
just ordered an SP dynamo hub, shimano lx rear and spokes and rims from Spa cycles so will attempt to build them up over the next couple of weeks.

i actually bought this one in the end:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0171JU2P0/ref=pd_luc_rh_sbs_01_04_t_img_lh?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
its a little heavier/sturdier but shouldnt have the same problem. couldnt see it on prime anywhere though so its standard delivery. we'll see! -

are the shimano rotors centrelock or 6 bolt?
