I think it's a combination of ring and cranks - the ring is probably ok but the interface with the spider isn't exactly precise (especially if you've seen Dura-Ace chainsets up close, mmm), and neither is the drilling (the bolt holes don't seem to be exactly aligned to the centre of the arms on mine). But then they are relatively cheap.
When you fit the ring you can use Sheldon's chain tapping method - it's a bit of work but it's good practice:
Yes I shall have another go at this when I build the bike that the stronglights are on up again. I had a quick bash after the first time I fitted it but after the bottom bracket incident mentioned ^^ above I don't think I was in the right state of mind for delicate adjustment and hence didn't have much success.

I'm pretty settled on around 66" for winter commuting in Leeds, mainly due to the horrible winds that make me want to cry when I'm going uphill. Also getting away from lights reasonably quickly is more important to me on a commute than being able to maintain a high top speed. I've no idea what my cadence is like but I suspect it's not that high, I'm not that fussed about whizzing about super fast everywhere though. And I like skidding on descents.

According to this list Wimbledon Evans have a 58 Feather for £300.

I guess that's still more than you're wanting to pay though.
Having said that, with them being shop-soiled they may take offers.

^I'm gonna get some Roth in the near future. I've read Everyman, Dying Animal, Exit Ghost, Indignation and Nemesis and really enjoyed them all. Time for something longer, I was thinking maybe The Human Stain.
Over Christmas I read
Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (how have I not read this until now?)
Valdez is Coming by Elmore Leonard
Roseanna by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö
and thoroughly enjoyed all of them.
I got the Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt out of the library on the way home from work tonight, I've heard very good things about it.
I also really fancy reading Fire Season by Philip Conners.

Obviously I find the likes of Michael Buble etc infinitely more upsetting than any of the bands that usually get mentioned when people talk about "depressing" music.
These are all bangers imo.

Excellent. I've finally had to admit to myself that I won't be satisfied until I have a brakeless fixie skidder with a flat crown fork and threaded steerer to mince about on. I was thinking maybe Soma Rush frame with S2 fork but I think I'll wait and have a look at the new S2's. Will you be getting some 60 or 61cm ones made?

I would say do it yourself; the fact that nearly all aspects of routine maintenance/upgrading are fairly straight forward is one of the things I love about owning a fixed gear.
However as andyp says, avoid that Stronglight bottom bracket, it's shite. I know this from bitter experience. The cups on mine were badly machined, a real nightmare to fit. Actually the non-drive side cup wouldn't fit all the way into the bottom bracket shell on the bike. And yes, I bought the right size/threading for the job.

It's a bit like that here in Leeds today. A complete howling gale, all day. Driving rain, shit all over the roads, gutters like the Nile, wind that makes your gob flap like your in a centrifuge.
Perversely, I quite like it. There's something of a challenge in riding in it, mainly because nobody else is riding in it. Lots of layers and waterproofs, but I also wish I'd got a larger cog for the back - 72" isn't too bad, but I'd like a cheeky 66" for days like these.
I changed down to about 65" on Monday night having struggled for traction on the ice that morning; I was very pleased with the lower gear in the subsequent winds. 70" or more uphill in a headwind pisses me right off.
My word that is hot.
