Yes I know it was weather affected, and that wasted the herculean effort that the team must have put in. I just think that the method I'm describing might be cheaper (no laminating and cable ties) and actually quicker to put in place. I don't want to take anything away from an event that does good and is enjoyable!

I always enjoy this ride and today was just as good as when it has shone in the past. Nice people to chat to even if there were fewer wheels earlier on. I had gps but something occurred to me. I appreciate the effort put in to do the signage but it always seemed to be hit and miss. I just wondered whether it might be easier, cheaper and a bit more effective to do what I've seen in a lot of French events. They put paper arrows directly on the road.(Or kerb) The paper is held down with wallpaper paste. One about 50 metres to go, one about 20 and then on the turn. Really quick to put down and wears/washes away after a couple of days so no need to do a second 'collection' run. It really seems easier for riders as well because they know where to look for the signs. There is no criticism meant because I do enjoy this ride. Just an idea.

Rode with Fedor in early 70s. He was visiting some Milk Race mates in Stoke on Trent and joined a winter training ride. We were all very proud but it was obvious that he could have ridden us juniors off he is wheel without breaking sweat. Oddest thing was that he was wearing a fur hat.
Nice frame. GLWS

I actually knew Dave Russell. Great character. Used to go into the Chaveley Road shop and get asked whether I wanted a cup of tea before I'd even said hello. One of his specialities was to hard boil an egg in the kettle at the same time. You could watch your frame take shape in front of you. Many great riders used to pop in for a chat. How he made a living is beyond me. Sadly missed.

After the fish and chips I met my friend and had a couple of beers and caught the 7.00 pm train. I arrived home at 12.30am due to train breakdowns and missed connections! 106 miles with all the transfers on top of the ride. Up at 5.00 to do a car boot with my daughter and then to a birthday picnic. Now I'm heading off to the land of nod.
It must be 35 years since I've done anything over 30 miles on fixed, but I'm amazed that I feel ok and my knees are working. Thanks for the great route and leading John. Ian thanks for towing me in the last few miles to the beach. A real gentleman.
Although I'm not London based I always enjoy the eclectic mix of forum members and the friendliness shown to strangers.
A pleasure to ride with you all.
Tim (grey giant - old and slow, me not the bike!)
Basso is a lovely looking frame, but that price would be a tad high for the complete bike I think. But GLWS.
