charles street bar right on the sea front
Great, just the job, huge menu to eat through after a days cycling, thanks very much.
-
I am going to be in Brighton tomorrow and know nothing about the place, I will have a bike but no lock so can someone recommend a pub with garden where i can eat outside to keep an eye on the steed.
If it has nice views of the sea and is easy to find without comprehensive town knowledge or ownership of a new fangled gps device then thats a bonus.

This.
Don't know why, but the skoda ad is ace.
I like the Skoda add apart from the bit when the rider get thrown on the bonnet, I assume in readiness for a massage to reduce his cramp, to me it looks like he's about to get raped.
And I know Boardman was a great cyclist but the arrogance of those adds makes me want to punch him in the face, surely someone with some puter skills (that rules me out) can meme these adds, sort of like 'when my team had to lift me off my bike at the end of a stage I knew I'd made a bike so uncomfortable it ruptured my sphincta in a few hours' or 'I often wondered what 2nd and 3rd place on the podium were for but then I never could count to 3' etc but done properly and, errr, funnier obviously.

I was brought up on thrash metal and Metallica and Slayer will always have a place in my festering, black, six inch nail punctured heart. I lived in battered old farm houses at the time with no neighbours and had a whopping stereo so my poor parents endured, and it was definately endured and not enjoyed, Hetfield and Araya's dulcet tones being pumped out at 11 shattering the tranquility of country life.
I must admit I am more of a repetetive beats kind of a guy these days, the last Metallica album I bought was the Black album, by then I was making boxes and had discovered the art of gurning and my music world changed forever. I prefer the old fast Metallica like Kill em All and Blitzkrieg rather than ballads and Dave Lombardo is a god with the sticks but again I lost touch and my knowledge of Slayer tunes did'nt go any further than Season in the Abyss (for me it was seasons in Newtown 6th form in rural Wales, which at the time felt very much like the Abyss).
Anyway I guess I am mid way through my mid life crisis as I already have 2 lugged steel bikes but now it is time to re-live the thrash years as I'm off to Knebworth this week for Sonisphere where the big 4 of Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax will be assaulting our senses. (Assuming Lars can stay off the coke long enough to finish his set without having to be helicoptered off to hospital for a bit of lay down, pffft well rock, not). I had a proper wave of nostalgia over the last week as I have listened to some of those old classics but also realised I am old, I did go and see Clash of the Titans in Wembley Arena in 1990 and it's just hit me that was 21 years ago, FFFUUUUUUU! As a result there is a bit of catching up to in terms of 'tunes' by the above that I need to get familiar with or else I'm going to look like some spotty Herbert's Dad who is just there to do the driving.
Bill Bailey's rendition of Angel of Death with a traditional chord structure had me chuckling on this:
http://uk.sonispherefestivals.com/tours/vip-tickets/
And my mate who sorted the tickets has gone for the VIP option (cringe), I thought this may mean we get glass bottles to piss into instead of the plastic ones the prols will be using, or we'd be boshing drugs with the roadies but alas no. I was mortified to see that this means I will be given a goody bag, WTF! A thrash metal gig with goody bags, do not want. I guess that is the face of the modern day corporate festival.
Anyway despite this I am still looking forward to it, mullet watch alone should be entertaining enough. So are any other forum-ungers going to be donning the denim and squeezing into those battered, flared and now too tight band t-shirts and heading off to this thrash fest this week?

Michelin Pro race 3's
Grip 9/10 very grippy tyre, v good
Handling **9/10 **confidence inspiring handling, even seem pretty good in the wet.
Wear 2/10 Have gone through 8 of these tyres in just over a year on my 2 nice bikes (so not v high mileage) they not on commuting duties. (i got a bulk order from merlin so have used them all up before considering replacing) They cut up really easily, I have them on a geared and a singlespeed so am no fixie skidder but the tread comes away in small strips and then you get punctures nearly every ride.
Puncture Protection 3/10 OK initially but wear so quickly that punctures soon become a regular occurance and can be punctured by gravel and nearly anything else, I think if I looked at them funny they would puncture. Just had my 3rd puncture in 10 days and that was the final straw so have ditched them.
Comfort 7/10 seem fine, depends on pressures, only go up to 116psi max which doesnt seem much.
Weight (or perceived rolling weight) 8/10 they are light
Speed (rolling resistance) 8/10 seem a fast rolling tyre, you get up to speed quickly and they hold speed well
Appearance (or Looks, if it comes in colours) 7/10 good looking tyre, come in wide range of colours, I have tried black and blue ones and the both wear out fast.
Price 4/10 Depends, mine worked out at about 20 each which was discounted and I feel that was a bit much considering the wear, if you can get deals on them maybe they are worth it but Evans list price for them is 35 quid and they are not worth that.
Skidability 1/10 I'm no skidder and these are not skidding tyres but don't reckon they would last a month of fixie skidding round London's streets
Overall rating / opinion 5/10, MEH, really nice tyre to ride but just don't last long enough and are too fragile. Can be tight fit on some rims too.
Have just swaped them on my Mercian for some of the new Scwalbe Ultremo zx's so will keep you posted on those, first impressions are they are light and gripy and go onto the rims by hand. They seem to have more puncture protection that the Michelins but we shall see how long they last. (and they are 52.78 a pair from ribble rather than list price of 41 each)
PS-I having a bit of a bad tyre week, been using Gatorskins on my beater and though I had no complaints up to now this week a sidewall on the rear came away from the metal beading rendering them useless, it seems this has happened before but that was my first 'conti tyres are shit' moment.

What am amazing achievement, massive respect, I never knew it was possible to do these kind of distances on a bicycle, in fact i don't think I've ever been that far in a car in 24 hours!
Did you weigh yourself before and after? (serious question, not forum ribbing on weight, surely having 'reserves' is good for events like this). It was so hot too that you must have lost a shed load of weight doing such a massive ride?
And also huge respect to anyone that can manage to 'eat' 26 powergels, no wonder you felt sick, I had two on a recent centuary ride and had a face like a baby eating a lemon and could manage no more.
It sounds like you got the bug for the 24 hour events and will be back to beat your distance next year, but for now bask in the glory, well done to you and your support team, proper big ring attitude.

Big props to all that did it, glad you guys caught the 6.25 train as we were no where near our 8.08 but it was a magical mytsery tour.. Has anyone heard from Rich (i think thats his name) who could'nt face another ride from pewsey? Thanks to Skive for organising and all the new peeps I met along the way.
That was my first night ride since doing dunwich about 5 years ago and I'd forgotten how nice it is whizzing through deserted country lanes and villages under the cover of darkness, I had no clue where I was for most of the journey but that didnt matter as the navigators did a splendid job.
I got in about 12.30 today to find my landlord and mate from australia waiting for me, and what did they want to do, go for a bike ride!! I've not slept yet and have just got back in from an extra ride to thames barrier and back, the return leg into such a massive headwind it felt I was'nt moving and I could have keeled over and slept right there. Had a few afternoon ales to keep going and am just off to local now to eat the entire menu then off for an epic super sleep that may last till the weekend. Cheers everyone.
-
I just stocked up on supplies, I too will be in the rum club as I figure its easier than lugging tinnies of lager all the way there, and it has some warming properties.
Just had a look at the route again and really looking forward to all those country lanes at night.
Aiming for a huge lunch and then a bit of a snooze but TFL are working on Viccy line air conditioning opposite my house and have a generator chugging away outside so kippage looking slim, I guess I should be thankful I'm not at work.
See you all later

just logged yesterdays 27 miles and was pleased to see I apparently burned 1350 calories which gives me 5 cake credits, I think thats how it works. A game based on amassing cake credits, how great is that. After the ride to the stones on Monday night I may have to eat cake all week to restore the equilibrium.
Over the course of the challenge I may save some trees but I'm likely to be significantly fatter and I expect my 'emissions' to be off the chart, did they think this through??

cheers Ludwig, classic forum brilliance in action, you get refund after being unable to make it and I get a ticket for cheaper than I could find, a true win win.
Good to see you too, sorry it was so brief, see you at souths soon, not been for a while as i'm not working and pub price beers is a luxury, especially on a monday night, but will pop along.
So all good to go, I hope people are'nt put off by the weather, remember there's no bad weather just the wrong clothes.

dont know if that quoting bit works as i'm still a puter luddite but @hoefla, i've got a nokia e71 which is brill, has internet, screen not as big as an iphone but big enough, has a full qwerty keyboard which is ace for texts and fine for my sausage fingers. battery also kicks apple into touch and had mine for over a year now and battery charge still lasts 3-4 days. also its been replaced by the e72 and maybe others since so should be able to get a good deal on it.

Alright folks,
am really looking forward to this but have just found out I am putting up some mates from stralia who arrive at heathrow at 7am on Tuesday, assuming the volcano disruptions are over by then. I don't have to meet them at the airport, they know the way to my house (Vauxhall) so reckon they will be there about 8ish, I guess they can wait in a greasy spoon for an hour or something if I'm late so I reckon I'll need to be back for 9ish.
How long do people tend to hang around the stones? Having been warned it will be freezing I will be prepared and assuming its not pissing it down in biblical fashion I think I'd be up for a couple of bevvies and soak up the yoghurt weaving atmosphere for a few hours before heading off.
Train back from Swindon seems to be the preferred route back and take about an hour it seems. I've never been to Swindon, thankfully, but it seems about 10 miles away from Avebury so if I allow an hour to get there I think I can stay at Avebury till as late as 7am.
And have you lot booked you tickets back already? All I can see on the thread is Mr Hedge is getting the 6.28 train. Don't tell me you are all cycling back??! Or are you getting tickets on the morning? I was going to do the latter so to be as flexible as possible but having just checked legalisedrobbery.com, aka Great Western Trains, I see the tickets seem to range in price from £38 to £94.50, for a hours journey, cheeky feckers. As I'm unemployed the second of these figures is well beyond my means so was about to book an advance ticket for £38 quid but just wondered if group saves is an option? I was totally unaware of this group save lark until the Cambridge ride when the now world famous Dropout introduced me to them but am a bit worried about getting stung on the day so wondered what you lot were doing and if its best if I just get an advance single for 38quid?
cheers
Danps -sorry for the tl:dr-ness of this, must work on getting my questions more concise
pps -well its certainly not getting any shorter with all the ps's is it
Thanks, its a toad really not that you can see from that distance. The Leon Britton photo reference was for the oldies that remember Spitting Image.
Cue loads of mad props on following photos, or not. I did get a funny look from the women sitting on the next boat bench as I got toad from my ruksak, I think she speed dialled someone saying there was someone on the loose and maybe they should check their wards for anyone missing, so I did'nt hang about.
